185"Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
While it is true that we should draw much attention to current events in order to solve some existent problems, and scandals may be more efficient in enthralling the public than reformers or speakers. However, scandals are widely publicized events that damage the reputation of an institution or individual. They seldom have any promotion in improving the quality of social life. In this case,
I think scandals are not useful whether in politics, academia, or other areas.
Medias make use of people's curiosity to focus our attention on scandals, they always reveal some public figure’s private lives. In order to maximize profits the media are simply giving the pubic what they demand – scrutiny of public figures that serves to diminish their reputation, such as the sex scandals in the entertainment area are often reported by mainstream medias. Public figures are admired by people because of their superior skills in particular area. However, through the scandals, it seems that all the public figures are immoral and have bad influence on the young generation. While scandals as a common phenomenon in today's society, it has little benefits to our lives. Medias should respect the private of individuals as well as public figures, and focus more on some positive aspects.
Sometimes scandals are used by someone to improve fame, when it comes to the academia, there would be a vast waste of time. For instance, in October 2007, the forestry department of Zhenping county, Shanxi published photographs of South China tiger in its native habitat, but these were later debunked after an investigation. Experts maintain that there are fewer than 20 of these tigers left in the world, and warn that it might become extinct within the next decade.
At that time, many scientists went to Shanxi province to have an investment, during almost one year they had not found any tigers. At last the finder said that he was intent to improve his popularity and owe more money. He had achieved his goal, he was known by almost everyone Chinese, for the investment for his treat was reported nearly everyday during 2008. Although most people pay attention to this event, it wasted a lot of time and had not promoted the protection of
endangered species.
Scandals may cause citizens dissatisfied with the government. If the scandals are about the members of government, people will suspect their leadership, and further more, their policies may be denied by more people.
For example, the Britain's expenses scandal which was revealed in 2009. Leading to daily mockery and dragging the popularity of Prime Minister Gordon Brown to record low levels and he had to pay a large sum bills. It was related to many members of the cabinet, some of them had resigned. The worst effect of this scandal was the Labour Party of Britain lost the public's support. It is harmful for Britain to over come current finical crisis.
In sum, scandals are caused from negative aspects in our society. They have no improvement to our lives, nor to academic areas. What's worse, they can be harmful to one's fame. Further more, they may lead to serious social problems. What really useful to politics, academia, or other areas are the problems which are claimed by authoritative reformers or speakers. |
