TOPIC:ARGUMENT 143 - The following appeared as a letter to the editor of a national newspaper."Your recent article on corporate downsizing* in the United States is misleading. The article gives the mistaken impression that many competent workers who lost jobs as a result of downsizing face serious economic hardship, often for years, before finding other suitable employment. But this impression is contradicted by a recent report on the United States economy, which found that since 1992 far more jobs have been created than have been eliminated. The report also demonstrates that many of those who lost their jobs have found new employment. Two-thirds of the newly created jobs have been in industries that tend to pay above-average wages, and the vast majority of these jobs are full-time." *Downsizing is the process in which corporations deliberately reduce the number of their employees.

=================================================================

The author of these argument assert that an article about workers lost their job during industry faced economic hardship would lead to reemployed difficultly.However,after a careful examination we would find that according the evidences the author provides is unsuffient to refute the artcle.

To begin with,more jobs have been created does not mean more workder formerly lost their job can be reemployed to these jobs.Due to the author provides no statistics about the study and capacity condition of these unemployees,it is entirely that these new jobs should required high-tech skills .And these new jobs are more suitable to people who recently graduated form colleges or high-skill specialists instead of those unempluyees who in old majoies.Lacking clear statement of the new jobs,this evidence cannot unconvinced the readers.

Second,the report gives vague statistics ”many of these” does not make sense. Because there no clear statistics about the number of the new jobs and unemployees .It is possible that compared with the number of new crested jobs,the total population who lost jobs may be excessive,thereby many workers find job after doensizing still be unemployed.In addition, the author ignores the total population might have grown,many guaduated from college come into job hunting as well. Thereby it might a firce competition between the gruaduate and workers lost job has begun.The author should give us the of these workers in the whole. Before we accept the assertion,we have to sure if these new created jobs are enough to those jobless.

Third,the author fails to inform us how many laid-off workers engaged in those highly paid and full-time jobs mentioned in the report.As for no perticular statement about those highly paid jobs’ requirement,many constrictions of age ,technology and experience might have put on those highly paid jobs,which the laid-off can not get in well.Moreover,it cannot rules out  those laid-off disered are part-time jobs.For this case,those highly paid and full-time jobs cannot alleviate the those laid-off’s straitedned circumstances.

Last but not least,the aritle have a clear statement that workers who lost jobs as a result of downsizing face serious economic hardship, often for years, before finding other suitable employment.The author seems neglect key words as “for years”and “suitable”.Since the author fails to provide statistics these unemployees spent how long to have a new job.It might that they are reemployed again after five or six years.Furthermore,as they were unemployed for a long time,they might have faced a hard time in making their life.Common sense tells us,one would like to recieve a low allowance job if he faced a serious ecomoic problems.For these reasom,though these workers have new job,it cannot claim that the new jobs are suitable to them,perhaps larger proportion of these reemployees have no choice but to get the jobs which are unsuitable to them resulting they need to make living.

To sum up,the author’s assertion lacks credible evidences to support.To refute the article,the author need to provide the percentage of worker lad-off by downsizing have a new job.More specifications about those new created jobs are need for evaluating whether those workers will suit to.
