138 "Only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress."
I agree with the speaker insofar as more often than not, mistakes are the predecessors of success. However, the speaker unnecessarily extends to a broader assertion that mistakes are the necessity to achieve progress. However,as the old Chinese saying goes," Man proposes, God disposes" ,which means although certain happenings are objective ,sophisticated to even cannot manipulate to most of cases, especially nature phenomena , we human's willingness and attitude towards failure and success play a vital role in determining the direction of happenings.
I concede that mistakes and success seem to be opposites that all of us pursue the latter by correcting the former. However, there is no need to clarify boundaries of them palpably(清楚地), since they are actually the products of same process which render them dialectic(辩证的). The moment we define mistakes as the unsatisfied results or processes which have differences with the ideal ones, we can call it a success because we are challenging ourselves and making progress.
Besides, the process of study is a tentative one through learning lessons from trial and error. Consider, the establishment of mathematic logics through continuous making mistakes in frustration and searching for errors; the creation of pressure -sensitive adhesive which is actually a failure of glue; 1800 materials not suitable to make bulb ,which had proved by Edison; the story to synthesizing "Formula 606" after 605 times errors. Who can say these failures are not a kind of success for making further progress for the following work and research?
The author's assertion further (further assertion) indicates that we should continuously make mistakes and learn lessons from them. I object this absurd relationship between mistakes and progress for the following two reasons. Admittedly, we should not be afraid of making mistakes for the reasons mentioned above. However, we should try hard to avoid failure. Since some colossal (巨大)mistakes will create irrecoverable hurt and obstacle our success. For example, politicians' tiny fault maximized by their opponents might lose their dreams and future in their lifetime; any deficiency of laws will become governments, even a threat to people's basic right. Similarly, the abuse of nuclear power might destroy our planet. If the earth does not exist, how can we have another chance to make up for errors? Time as well as opportunities is precious, if we mistake out of our mind, it is really hard to catch up another precondition of progress. Secondly, in the notion of research, lays my contention with the speaker’s broader assertion that we can predict the results before we invested in it. Yet, what we previously predict could not be clarified as mistake or success; meanwhile idealistic result might not need previous mistakes as step-stones. Since success actually have strong connection with opportunity and variable conditions. Relying on processor’s knowledge and experience, in most cases we can get desired result directly without any mistake(making mistakes, 似乎更合适,any太强).
Admittedly, the saying that "attitude determines everything" overemphasizes human's ability, yet it reflects that people's knowledge, ideas, and persistence exert indispensable influence on process. It is true that a better man he is, the more mistakes he made. However, not everyone is capable to defeat mistakes. The precondition of making success relies largely on elaborate preparation mentally and physically. Cyrus West Field who led the Atlantic Telegraph Company can aptly illustrate this point of view. Field suffer great pressure and financial lose(lost) after his company’s first transatlantic cable broken down. He adhered to finish the engineering .As a result, the transatlantic telegraph cable sped up communication to within minutes which could only happen over ship before. History is filled with great explorers and scientists like Field, whose stories express a kind of spirit and eternal strength to fight for their dreams, not considering results practically(这样说很不妥哦,建议改为而不去畏惧失败). Thus it is how to face our lives and attitude toward the difficulties, not just mistakes that becomes the backbone to success.
In sum, although mistakes teach us lessons, tell us when to change direction, these lessons are negative and compressive for us to make progress and discovery.(加个转折词或什么的,infact、actually) It is people’s knowledge, attitudes, persistence to face mistakes and difficulties bravely that help us go further and more smoothly.
