It is a hot topic in nowadays about what makes a leader leader? Frankly speaking, the leaders do have some qualities and characteristics that the mediocre people do not possess, however, among all those qualities, I believe the highest ethical and moral standard is not in the list.

It is hard to define the ethical and moral, leave away about how to identify what activities are the “highest”. People are born in different places, they were raised by different parents, and grow up in different environment, although there do exist some wildly accepted things which are regarded as good, such as being honest to others, having responsibility to your work, the definition of ethical and moral standard is not that clear as a whole. Is it justify for the US president to provide 700 billion tax payer’s money to save the bankrupting companies, or should he leave the General Motor to die without giving it a hand? According to a investigation, the opponents and proponents are nearly 50-50, that is to say, half of the Americans think it is wrong for doing so, or, this action are according the “highest ethical and moral standard”. However, this action do saved some companies, and helped the recovery of American’s economy. Another example, should we enforce the North Korea to stop his nuclear research and do the commitment that he will never do those kind of research in the future? Is it moral to halt other country’s nuclear improvement while we have done a lot? Of course the Koreans do not think so, but in those countries which propose this action, the residents do think their leader make this decision according the ethical and moral standard.

It is not only unrealistic theoretically for the calls of the highest ethical and moral standard; it is also not applicable in the real world. Human being is not perfect, and every of us have flaws and disadvantages. If we call for the highest, we may help producing the hypocrite. We have saw a lot of those who act as if according the highest standard in public, but do the harmful activities underhand. In some countries, the public officials are paid much more than ordinary workers, in order to prevent them from corruption. It is a good policy, because they totally understand that the officials are normal human beings who just have a comparatively higher, if not equal to, ethical and moral standard than ordinary people, and they are not uncorruptible. Only when we fully understand and totally accept the idea that official are just humans like us, and they do not, and can not, have the highest ethical and moral standards, can we form an effective and efficient society.

However, although I debate that there is no need, and in fact not realistic, to call the officials to have the highest standard of ethic and moral, I do agree that the public officials should have some of the qualities which are accepted by public as good, such as the responsibility and honest. But if I am asked to choose a public official, I think I will focus more on this person’s skills of management and capability of leading people, rather than merely on the ethical and moral thought. After all, it is the politicians who build and rule our states, not the philosophers.
