While digital era generation emphasizes the significance of television as a vivid tool for communication, others argue against that printed book plays a more important role in our society. After a scrutiny of both media, I will point out my own idea that in modern society, printed book has a more considerable influence than does the television.1 U' }: x; k4 y
First, printed book has some functions that television cannot serve. Power from the literature is unable to be substituted by pictorial program. In the novel Lover, written by a female author Margaret Duras, literal narration of characters' emotion allows us to imagine how deep the couple looked into each other, how sorrow they seemed to be when they were forced to separate. In contrast, we are led by the movie from the same story, which deprives enjoyment of imagination. Thus, we may lose opportunities to explore the further meaning of the work. Printed book also serves as a record tool to document abstract theories and profound ideas. Plato's Utopia has never been transformed into photographic video, since most of the passages have enormous difficult to be expressed by television images.

Second, printed book is still the main media to impart information due to economic and technical factors. While in some developed countries, television is used to be a crucial way to disseminate news, information, and even universities use television to offer courses to students remote from the campus. However, in most of the developing and under-developing countries, for the people who live in poor, they still through printed books to learn about the world, since printed books are cheaper and easier to access. Many needy children in Qinghai Province, one of the most backward districts in Western China, have never known about that there is a magic machine named television. They just can take advantage of their old books from charities to take courses.

Furthermore, some of printed books are worthy to be collected as cultural or historic relics. For example, 18th century’s English historian Giben's famous work "The History of The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" had been reserved over thousands sets before it was republished. The limited edition copies of ancient Chinese calligrapher Wang Xizhi's calligraphic works have being collected by fans in extremely expensive prices. Try to think about that if those books are changed into digital images, would they be collected so zealously as private treasures? Thus, it’s safe to say that television images also cannot be compared with printed books in such realm.
In conclusion, printed book has a larger impact on our life and our society for the reasons listed above. However, if we take advantages of both printed book and television as supplement for each other, our society may be changed faster and better.
