Inside the Earthen Vessel
April 2002
Goals and the Double-Minded
Yogi Berra, one of the great philosophers of our generation, once said: “If you don’t know where you’re going, you might not get there.” Yogi has a way of getting to the point by stating the obvious. However, it is astounding how many people actually go through the years of their lives on earth without seeking a destination. Like ships without rudders, they sail the seas, but only as the current moves them. James uses similar imagery when he speaks of the “double-minded man” in James 1:5-8. The double-minded man is one who doubts and, therefore, cannot seek God in faith. James said that, “...one who doubts is like the surf of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.” The double-minded man is a fellow who has not made up his mind as to where he is going.
When you get to chapter four of James, you discover that the double-minded man is one who is trying to please and serve God while holding on to the world. Such a man is literally, “two-souled,” or leading a double life, thus a double-minded man. In other words, James says you need to make up your mind where you want to go... the way of God or the way of the world. One cannot leap back and forth between God and the world. God does not accept such double-mindedness.
A Christian must become a single-minded man who knows where he is headed. Christians are people who have made up their minds and are committed to a heavenly destination. Having such a goal affects the way they respond to earthly circumstances.
The self-improvement gurus of our age all say the same thing: People need to set goals to be successful. Goals are the only way to measure where we are and what we have accomplished and whether we are moving in the right direction or not. An interesting study was done with a 1950’s graduating class of Yale University. A survey of the class revealed that only three percent had written goals while ninety-seven percent had not. Twenty-five years later, the three percent who had written down their goals had amassed ninety percent of the group’s wealth. They also seemed to be happier and better adjusted in their life circumstances. When you know where you’re going, life becomes a joy, not a drudgery.
Commitment to a goal enables you to endure adversity, overcome obstacles, and resist distractions. The Christian has his eye on something beyond this realm, so whatever occurs in this life will not deter him from his goal. The double-minded man is not focused beyond the moment. He runs hot and cold in his pursuit of heaven, depending on who he is with or the kind of circumstances that confront him.
The first step in determining a goal is to ask, “What do I really want?” The decision we make about what we want creates within us single-mindedness. Sadly, the double-minded man is torn between seeking God and pursuing the world because he has never answered this question. He will not find genuine happiness in life and his earthen vessel will continue to flounder in the seas of despair, not knowing where he is going. The destination we reach is determined by a decision we make, deep.., within our earthen vessel.
