Issue 48
“The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten.”

The speaker asserts that our historians pay too much attention to the outstanding individuals’ contribution and function on promoting the civilization of human beings but ignore the groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten. Moreover, the speaker concludes that the faceless groups of people play a more important role than the excellent persons in the course of history. I accept the view that sometimes we neglect what general persons have done in the history but I still cannot agree with the latter aspect of the claims.

Both the general nameless persons and the famous few proffer their strength, passion and ability in creating the history. Just considering about the American Revolution and the Great Depression, we will easily concluded that without soldiers’ tussle against enemies general Washington cannot lead America gain independence; without Americans’ hard work, the president Roosevelt’s new economic policy would turn to be an armchair strategy. The other way round, without outstanding individual’s leadership people would not hold together for the same tenet.

These examples only tell us that without each side of groups, the others cannot make the most significant events and trends possible. But we cannot deduce whether the groups of faceless people contribute more than the famous few or not.

Admittedly quite a number of historians focus on the excellent works which are made by the outstanding individuals. By scanning the history books, we will find that there are more space to give further details to the famous than the general. I think there should be reasons why historians place much emphasis on individuals.

To answer this question we should look on the outstanding individuals carefully. Firstly these excellent persons are at a core position in the society. Why Hitler can start Second World War not others is because he is the president of Nazi Germany. If a general German citizen wanted to start a war, he would soon be sent into the prison. Secondly these groups of leaders has been the typical representatives of their organization’s or their countries’ spirit. So the president Clinton had to apologize for his adultery and the president Nixon had to abdicate after the Watergate Event. People cannot bear these behaviors and these famous persons have more effect on others than the general. Finally most famous persons are more excellent than others indeed. Why did Napoleon not other French general become the emperor of France? We can learn many thing from these excellent persons if we want to be successful.

As a conclusion, we should appreciate both the famous’ and the general’s contribution to our civilization advance. And we can also harvest a lot by studying the outstanding persons’ experience. Because they do play a more important role than the nameless groups of people in making the most significant events and trends possible.

Moreover, the speaker concludes that the faceless groups of people play a more important role than the excellent persons in the course of history. I accept the view that sometimes we (historians) neglect what general persons have done in the history(这个观点偷换了主语,题目中讲的是历史学家,两个应该是不同的概念) but I still cannot agree with the latter aspect of the claims.

(这2个例子连接得很好)The other way round, without outstanding individual’s leadership people would not hold together for the same tenet.

By scanning the history books, we will find that there are more space to give further details to the famous than the general. I think there should be reasons why historians place much emphasis on individuals.(这两段之间的连接有些突兀,作为过渡段的话最好还是合成一段吧)

Secondly these groups of leaders has been the typical representatives of their organization’s or their countries’ spirit. So the president Clinton had to apologize for his adultery and the president Nixon had to abdicate after the Watergate Event.(这两个例子用的比较奇怪,如果用正面的例子可能会更好,因为要论证的是精英对历史的推动作用) People cannot bear these behaviors and these famous persons have more effect on others than the general. Finally most famous persons are more excellent than others indeed. Why did Napoleon not other French general become the emperor of France?(这句问话和前面的why Hitler句式重复了,类似的例子证明不同的方面最好避免) We can learn many things from these excellent persons if we want to be successful.(最后一句其实是想用这样的研究方法有好处,来证明研究方法所基于的世界观就是对的;就像是认为有天堂可以减轻恐惧,因此天堂就是真实存在的一样,这样论证有问题)

最后那个解答我很喜欢~~~我要想想……这个我倒是从没有考虑过会出现论证问题,很随意地就写出来了没仔细推敲过~~~
