TOPIC: ARGUMENT211 - The following appeared in a memorandum to faculty from the academic vice president of Waymarsh University.

"So that we can better accomplish Waymarsh University's academic goals, we should adopt the job-opportunity (job-op) program offered at Plateau Technical College and strongly encourage all students at Waymarsh to participate in it. The success of the job-op program at Plateau is evident: over the past two years, more than 75% of the freshmen at Plateau have enrolled in the optional job-op program. Moreover, at Plateau, the grades of job-op students are consistently higher than those of other students, 90% of the job-op students receive job offers within a month after their graduation, and most former job-op students report much success in their careers."

In the memo, the academic vice president of Waymarsh University suggests that the university should adopt the job-op program in order to better achieve university's academic goals. To support his recommendation, the author cites that students in Plateau Technical College, who have enrolled in this program, have gained success both in class study and job-hunting. Though it sounds like a very tempting measure, the suggestion suffers from some critical flaws and is therefore unpersuasive as it stands.

Firstly, the conclusion that WU should take the job-op program is based on an false analogy. Actually there is no evidence to show that WU have the same situation as PTC to adopt this measure. It is entirely possible that the job-hunting quality is well trained among students in WU, and what they need most is the method for academic study. And perhaps WU has stricter requirements for students' academic performance than PTC, while the job-op program only fit for
students in low-level. Without ruling out these possibilities, the conclusion is unwarranted.

Secondly, the president assumes that it is because of the program's effectiveness that leads to students' success in PTC. But this is not necessarily the case. It is at least likely that those who attend the program may be generally more proactive and responsible for their own development. It may, in fact, be their natural responsibility that makes them more successful in study and their career. If this is possible, then the claim that the program is very effective in develop students' ability cannot be made.

Thirdly, the president hints that the academic performance of WU's students should be developed, but he fails to come up with other possible solutions. Maybe the management of the university should also be strengthened; maybe the moral of stuff should be boosted. Under these circumstances, just adopting the program would be ineffective at all for the purpose of better accomplishing university's academic goals.

To sum up, the argument mentioned above is not convincing as it stands. To bolster it the arguer should provide dear evidence that students there need this kind of training program. The arguer must also show that the job-op program is really effective in developing students' ability both in study and career. To better evaluate the argument, it would be useful to know what other means are available for accomplishing the academic goal.
