The reading passage point out the subject of a portrait which is ready for sell by Austin family is Jane Austin. By challenging the statement in the reading passages, the professor listing contradictory reasons to the reading.


First, in the reading, some may think the girl in the portrait is Jane Austin, because it had been used in one of her books with the agreement of her family, 1882. The professor refute the statement by explain that in 1882, Jane Austin has been dead for almost 70 years, so at that time, her family member could never seen her before, so they could not make sure of it.


    Second, in the reading, another reason that some believe the girl in the portrait is Jane Austin because the girl in the portrait looks like another sketch---the only generally accepted portrait of Jane Austin. In the lecture, the professor pointed out Jane Austin lived in a big family, there are many relatives of her, they may look alike. So the professor says many experts believe the girl in the portrait maybe is one of her female cousins.

Finally, in the reading, it is considered that the girl in the portrait is Jane Austin because the style of the portrait. The professor questions the canvas used for the portrait by raising
evidence that the man who sell the canvas did not sell canvas in London when Jane Austin was a teenage, he begin sell canvas until Jane Austin was 27. The canvas was used for the painting when Jane Austin was older than the girl in the portrait.
