Since the outbreak of the industrial evolution, science and technology spring up like mushrooms, and the whole world reveals a comparative flourish phenomenon. In the meantime, behind the prosperity, occur numerous kinds of problems that never be encountered before. Therefore, People provided that the problems they confront are much more comprehensive and adventurous than the ones their predecessors faced. To my way of thinking, on one hand, it is true because of the contemporary scarcity of the knowledge and the relativistic lagging technology could not be of help to solve the problems. However, these assumptions ultimately could be turned out to be illusions and dispelled with the increased experience and episteme. On the other hand, some problems which could not be easily solved by the advanced technology and ample experience are also exists.
We all agree about the fact that the development of the human society needs the advance of the science and technology, whose advancement is the only reason that leads to the improvement in the productivity and finally spurs on the boom of the whole society. It is undoubtedly that new problems untouched before would occur one by one as the researches going on, and some of them would be considered less comprehensive and challenging but finally be worked out by the new technologies. For example, the well-known four color theorem-----given any separation on a plane into contiguous regions and these regions can be colored at most four colors so that no two adjacent regions would be the same color. The problem is believed to be so hard that many a scientists false to prove it since the 1st statement appeared in 1852. Whereas, with the born of the computer two scientists named Kenneth Appel and Wolfgang Haken in 1976 successfully worked out this significantly difficult problem. It was the first major theorem to be proved using a computer. We must admit that it was the computer skills, the new technology that made the four color theorem not as hard as before and helped to solve it.
Nevertheless, not all the problems we encountered are considered to be much more simplified and less challenging than the predecessor’s even with the assistance of abundant experience and pioneering technology. One of the most powerful evidence is the climate change problems. Global warming, the most eye-catching one, is revealed to be more and more severe and troublesome as the accumulation of experience and technology. On no account are we able to deny that none of the currently advanced technology would take effect in stopping the situation from going worse. What is more, the carbon dioxide continuously released by the products of the developing technology and flourishing industry is one of the main reasons that trapped us in a execrable surroundings. Not only the climate change, but also some natural hazards, such as flood, sinkholes, mudflows, etc. have not been reduced but aggravated by the improved technology and accumulated experience.
Granted that problems are regarded easier by the improved technology and accumulated experience, it is not saying that the key to the problem is easier to find, either. Ever since the appearance of gun, issues about safety are discussed all over around. There are many areas of debate into whether gun should be allowed to be privately owned. We must admit that gun has both protected and formed a threat to our safety, but does privately owned gun work as a protector or murder? It depends. That’s why gun policies differ from countries all over the world.
In sum, to some degree technologies and experience are of great help to solve problems, it breaks up the illusion that problems are more comprehensive and adventurous than before, but it is not 100 percent right because sometimes the assumption could also become truth. |
