51"Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
Everyone of us is unique, while shools tend to make us the same; on the other hand, if all the students have made the most of themselves, they will be happier, and the society will also benefit a lot. In this sense, when education is specifically designed to cater to individual needs and interest, it will be more effective. Nonetheless, it is impossible and harmful if the education systerm pay attention to the interests of each student, due to the limited resources and the importance of basic knowledge and skills.
Admittdly, it is very important for shools to help students find their own interest and encourage them to follow it. Interests can be a great motivation for children to learn new things, as Albert Einstein puts it, “interest is the best teacher”. When a student learns by his interests, he can learn happily, and will also gain a lot. For example, Steven Jobs, who was absorbed by the electronic products when he was youth, have set up the famous company Apple and created the fantasitic products like the Macintosh and iPond, he concludes his experience after droping out Reading University with these words, “And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on”. So it will be benefical not only to individuals, but also to society, when school attaches importance to students’ interests.
However, the limited resouses lead to the result that it is imposible for schools to be designed so that they can meet everone’s needs. As we know, even though the affairs of education are widely concerned, government will not give endless money to it, due to the reason that there are other pressing social problems-such as disease, unemployment-to deal with.
What’s more, if we emphsize too much on the different needs of individuals, it will also have the tendency to diminish the education towards fundamental skills and knowledge. As we known, the basic skills and knowledges is important because they ensure children grow to become reasonably informed, productive members of society. If couses are designed only to meet individual needs, then those that also crucial will be neglected. Furthermore, the education might also abandon classes on teaching core values upon which any democratic society depends to thrive; as a result, it will be a disarster.
In deed, the main purpose of modern education systerm is to rasie a pile of standardized professionals to meet the need of society and to develop the personality of the individual. They seems paradoxial at first glance, however if schools can maximize the sevice of multiple education cater to studnets’ different tastes on the foundation that general knowledge has been taught, individuals can make the most of themselvs and the society will also benefit, then this purpose will come true. |
