11"All nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems."
Should all nations assist to build a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems, as the speaker asserts? As far as I concern, although a global university can afford a more international perspective, it would turn out to be useless or even jeopardize the interests of some countries, which will be devious from its original expectation.
To begin with, with the social development and technology innovation, tremendous convenience has been brought to our daily life, which comes along with the more enduring social problems that needs international cooperation and coordination. In the aspect, a global university that aimed at solving the world's most persistent social problems is expected to occur. It will provide students with different nationalities, races and believes a platform to communicate ideas and therefore afford a more comprehensive thought towards the enduring problems.
Unfortunately, the solution to majority of most persistent social problems are impossible to be taught in universities, for which still has not been figured our by the experts nationwide. For instance, terrorism, which exerts threatening to the residents all over the world, its solution is still above criticism. As a result, no professors or experts are qualified to give the lesson of the attitude towards dealing with Terrorism. Furthermore, the energy shortage, which demands the endeavor from a myriad of industries to limit the consumption and a variety of fields to develop new energy resource, is so complicated that cannot be learned by the students within several years. Therefore, the students may not be able to provide any solutions as we expected.
Furthermore, it is too excessive to require all the nations to help build such a university. Many countries are still suffering from poverties and starvations, even the war, such as Iraq. Under such circumstance, the most urgent problems for those countries are providing their people a better living condition, rather than patronizing a global university. Apart from that, the country who accommodates greater financial support would possibly demand for prior consideration of their own problems, which made the university a tool to solve their own problems rather than the world's s persistent social ones.
Finally, since countries would joined in different interest, it would be so difficult to receive a compromise among many issues. This point can be appropriately proved by the case of tariff. For the developed country, with higher technology and lower cost, would ask for lower tariff, in the name of fairness for commercial market, while the developing country would expect a higher tariff, in order to protect their domestic industries. Thus, no certain answer could be provided to settle the appropriate tariff to satisfy everyone. In this analysis, there is no solid perspective for the university to stand. If dealing inappropriately, it would even stimulate the conflicts among different countries.
In conclusion, although a global university is expected to provide more comprehensive perspective to solve the world's most persistent social problems, the feasibility of this university is based on shaky foundations, because these problems cannot be simply solved by studying at universities. Moreover, if addressed inappropriately, the world's most persistent social problems stimulated rather than relieved.
