Issue 36 "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
By human nature, we are doing our best to realize the lifetime dreams and simultaneously hoping to win others’ recognition of our hard-earned greatness. However, things may sometimes go to the opposite of what you have longed for. In my opinion, in the science or art realm, the greatness of individuals is mostly decided by those who live after them, as the speaker asserts. While in the field of business, people are more likely to get instant fame.
To begin with, in the realm of art, as great masters’ cognitive abilities often transcend their times, their works can be misunderstood by the contemporaries. Apart from the story of Van Gogh and his masterpiece----sunflower, another apt illustration involves the example of Jan Vermeer. In retrospect, Jan Vermeer, a Dutch Baroque painter who seems to have left no legacy but debt to his family. Because the idiom of luxury is prevailed in his age, while he specialized in exquisite, domestic interior scenes of middle class life, he has never sold one of his paintings during his lifetime. But he clang tenaciously to creating a perfect world and delivering the eternal theme: Love. Fortunately, with the development of people’s perception, Vermeer's reputation has grown, and he is now acknowledged as one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age.
As for science realm, truth should be tested empirically. I’d like to take Bruno, an astronomer best known as a proponent of heliocentrism, for example. The theory he stuck to was totally beyond people’s religion, therefore he was burned at the stake by authorities in 1600 after the Roman Inquisition found him guilty of heresy. It was not until his death did he gain considerable fame and now, he was regarded as the pioneer of free thought and modern scientific ideas.
By contrast, we don’t need a rear-view-mirror to recognize business giants’ greatness, they can be decided immediately by how much money they have earned and the economic contribution to the society. Warren Buffett, for instance, is recognized, to some extent, as the greatest American investor and philanthropist. His business acumen leads him to huge success. Ranked by Forbes as the richest person in the world in 2008 he has as well donated billions of dollars to charity. In 2007, he was listed among Time's 100 Most Influential People in the world.
To sum up, this issue should be determined on a case-by-case basis. Because of difference in times, taste and culture, art and science masterpieces are difficult to receive approbation overnight; those who live after the celebrities may have a better and thorough estimation of their greatness. Nevertheless, as for business, people are easy to recognize the economic success. |
