As the speaker’s claim that the absenceof choice is a rare circumstance, I basic agree with it. In fact, unless one isin unconsciousness circumstance or be forced to do something (perhaps illegalor the nature disaster), you have already made your choice whatever do or notto. However, no action is still a choice.

Our lives are full of choices, both in mentallyand physically, indeed. While a loving couple have dating, they can choose tohave a meal or nourish their sense to see a movie together; while decide to eat,they can choose to have a meal at home or go to the restaurant; while go out, theyalso can choose a cheaper one or not; while in restaurant, more and more foodcan be chosen for them. Not to mention our daily lives filled with thousands ofactions and thoughts. Any previous chooses can lead to countless follow-ups. Intoday’s freedom world, unless we go against something illegal or unlucky tomeet a nature disaster as well as these irresistible things, how could we meeta circumstance of no choice?
What we must acknowledge is that a no choicecircumstance almost happens subjectively. People say they have no choice is notbecause they have no chance to choice but actually they don’t want to makechoices for the reason of lacking dynamic, or even, the condition to support theirdecision is too poor so that they feel hopeless to choose. Consider a studentgraduated from university full of ambition, unfortunately, the competition isso stiff that the gap between ideal and reality seems unbridgeable. Neither thegraduated student willing to be mediocrity nor could he realizes his ambition. Thus,the circumstance of absence of choice happens. This graduated student loses histarget full of depression and sadness. Another good example is that a normal boyfalls in love with a beautiful girl, or rather, falls in deep, one-sided lovewith this girl regardless of own condition. It is a normal phenomenon of youth,nevertheless, the bad thing is that this boy neither wants to marry a normalgirl nor does he dare to express himself for the reason of fear of rejection.Thus, the circumstance of absence of choice happens. Secret love seems to be ahuge rock block this normal boy’s inner mind and deny his other choices.

In fact, these “no choice” circumstancesis not the really no choice objectively. While facing several frustrated waysin people’s lives, we already have choices. The key to make these choices is tokeep our faith. Besides, how can you know the result since you even don’t wantto have a try? Perhaps the graduated students could finally stand out from thecrowd through his hard-working. Perhaps the normal boy could finally gain thatbeautiful girl’s heart because of his genuineness. Abraham Lincoln can beregarded as one of the greatest American presidents is not just because of hisleading talent but also his spirits of keep on fighting and never give up hischoice, as well as Ludwig van Beethoven, a musician who could still keeping oncreating the greatest music project regardless of his deafness. Every great manis sure to be a determined people. Admittedly, choices are always around us.


To sum up, unless we meet the irresistiblesituation, we always have many choices in our lives. Of course, the more effortwe pay, the more gains we will have. Choices are always there, the key iswhether we can discovery it or not.

Is that the absence of choices a circumstance very , very rare as the speaker claims? In my view, I tend to agree with the contention because this statement accords with common sense of human lives and our everyday experience . After all, the God give everyone equal choices. And in current society, people should learn how to make the best choice for himself.

In the first place, in social level, comparing with the past ,most of us are now living in more democratic societies where we can express our own ideas more freely,everyone has the opportunities under the same conditions, and choose which can suit our will to a large extent. With the rapid development of science and technology, people’s lives have been dramatically changed over the last decades, there are more fair rights,such as women voting rights, different races can be treated more disinterested than before.Not like the feudal system, the slavers were oppressed and limited by the rigid bureaucratic regime. They had no choices but to work arduously on the farm generation by generation. The common sense tell us dictates that humans have free will and therefore the true absence of choice is very rare.

In the second place, People often claim that life's circumstances leave them with "no choice." One might feel trapped in a job or marriage. However, in reality they may have a lot of choices, it is just because they are only considering those choices that are not viable or attractive. When face those situations, people would think that they lack choices, which actuaaly does not mean we really have no choice but we need some time and knowledge to seek and consider the choice hidden behind , and sometimes, we should treat the circumstance from another angle. And many times, there are many choices before us, it is just that many of the choices are unappealing even self-defeating, and people don’t want to choose. For example, every person who claims to be trapped in a job is simply choosing to retain a certain measure of financial security, but he or she also can give up this ,and to make other choices such as finding a new job. And when the policeman caugth a thief and asked him why ,the thief said he has no choice of unemployment and has to feed his family.Do they really have no choice? Of course no. They just don’t know how to make the best choices for themselves.

What’s more , today one's feel of no choice roots in their fragile beliefs and short-term views. They just dare not to make decisions, as some choices seems detrimental currently but will be beneficial in long-term run. After all the human ‘s fate is not determined .With the improvement of education, people should use their wisdom and knowledge to make correct choice.

To sum up, despite the fact that we all more or less experience of having no choice , the statement is fundamentally correct .And we should use our intelligence and information to make the best use of choice.

I strongly agree with the speaker. Choices commonly exist in our daily life. Rarely, we can meet a circumstance that choice is absent. In fact, people complain that there is no choice, generally not because there’s no choice. In addition, we should make the best use of every choice.

To begin with, people make choices everyday, no matter in important events or in dispensable stuffs. For example, to pursue a master degree, one may chooses mathematics, physics or management as her major. When tired, one may choose milk or coffee to drink. Basically, these choices can be divided into two categories. The first one includes choices that are easily realized, because there are clear clues which tell people that they have to choose. For instance, if somebody wants to enter a university, there are so many choices such as Princeton, MIT or Harvard. To contact an old friend, one can make a phone call, send email or write a letter. Choices in these things have been in their mind since people meet them. The other one contains choices that are hardly realized. Usually, when people meet some problems at the first time or form a habit, it is improbable for them to see the choices. In short, choices commonly exist in our daily life.

Then, why do people often complain there is no choice for them? One of the most important reasons is that they don’t realize the choices, just as I have explained in paragraph two. Besides, when somebody is forced to do something, he/she seems have no choice according to common sense. However, this doesn’t mean there’s no alternative method. For example, students are forced to take exam at the end of each semester. It appears they must fulfill this task, otherwise they may be punished. Yet, the case, that rejecting taking the exams, is still a choice. Moreover, if someone is inept to attain a goal by any optional approach, there seems no choice for him/her. Take computer science for example. To write a computational program, one can use C language, B language, and so on. However, those who just master C language, have no choice. So, based on these reasons, people complain they have no choice, not because there is no choice.

Furthermore, even choices commonly exist; we cannot abuse them. According to common sense, one usually chooses things and approaches, which minimize his/her losses or maximize his/her benefits. Hunting for a job can be used as an example. People often choose companies which pay high salaries. However, people should abandon those choices that are against morality and laws, or harm to our society. For instance, if someone wants to earn money, he/she can look for a job or manage his/her business. Yet, he/she cannot sell drugs, steal or rob; even it is easy to make a lot of money. If they only care their own profits, how many people will be hurt? So, those detrimental choices cannot be applied.

In sum, there are choices in everything; we should make the best use of them.

What the speaker claims, the absence is circumstance that is very rare, seems to be a substantiated and sound. From my perspective of this issue, in our usual life most of our circumstance have abundant choices for us to decide. When we feel desperate for few options, it is mostly like that we haven’t face it. Life is full of opportunities and options and it is always hard to discover them and choose them.

Even for Great Depression, there still are several choices to figure it out, though the whole world is full of frustrate and desperate. Great Depression is a world-wide depression in the decade preceding World War II. Its devastating effects can clearly observe in every country, whatever it is rich or poor. Private incomes, tax revenue, profit and priced all drop down greatly and the international trade even fall about 2/3. Unemployment of the United States even climbs up 25%. The Great depression caused so many lasting effects in America and didn’t disappear more than half a century. It devastated lots of people who were not defeated by lack of food, clothes, shield but the hopeless and desperate society. Facing the Great Depression Adolph Hitler choose to use wars to recover the economics. His decision was regarded as a main reason of the World War II. However, Franklin Delon Roosevelt promised of a New Deal for Americans which firstly recover the banks, railway, industry and farms, and the start Wagner Act to improve the employment and labor. These two men’s decision brought out extremely different results soon after that. As Hitler’s decision broke out the World War II, Roosevelt’s decision calls for a great support from the labor alliance, the black the ethnic and religion organizations, which successfully recover the American’s economics finally. Fro my perspective, it seems that the choices are always there, at this point , the essential factor which influence much is the attitudes when one facing these options. It is the attitudes decide that decide what you will make but not circumstance.

However, even if the choices always exist seemingly, it still calls for a foresight, a correct self-assessment and even a compromising attitude to find it. Sometimes what we need is just to change our perspective and thought to discover hem. Most time we focus on what a bad situation we have, but ignore some fundamental and choices behind it. We are not slaves who are born to obey other masters and have no choices for themselves, even as employees can still choose their employers. We don’t see choices because we live in our world with out own perspective which can hardly change. For example, many people complained about school education because students are being stuffed with an indigesing mass of material that they have no time to draw evaluating the material. However, most parents still send their children to schools with anger and worry without thinking or other solution. If they are so unsatisfied with the teaching style for killing children’s creativity, why not get teacher license from the government and teach children at home ? On the contrary, most of us prefer having vegetation at home than teaching by ourselves even for primary students. We even never think of choosing some other schools just because most people send their children to this school. We have choices with no doubt, but we never pay attention to it. Nevertheless, complaining about the education institution comes much simpler than teaching by ourselves. Most time we just neglect or pretend to neglect the possible choices because of our carelessness and laziness.

To sum up, we are never lack of choices because we live in a multi- cultural society and it always provide us different opportunities and options from different angle and different people. What we need is wider sight and plenty modes of thinking.

Is it true that the absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare? The speaker clams so and I strongly agree with the speaker’s assertion according to the natural level, social level as well as personal level.

According to Darwin’s theory of evolution, the development of the nature is a process involves the gradual choices by nature. Darwin believed all the life on earth evolved over millions of years from a few common ancestors. Darwin's theory of evolutionary selection holds that variation within species occurs randomly and that the survival or extinction of each organism is determined by that organism's ability to adapt to its environment. This is a process called nature selection.

In addition to nature selection, the development of the society company with a myriad of choices. Actually we always face with different choices along with our whole life. It’s impossible for a person to live apart from selections. Personally, anyone could prefer to get up at certain time, or could prefer to go school by certain public transport, or prefer to choose certain courses. Common sense dictates that humans have free will, so the true absence of choice is very, very rare. The only exceptions would involve extreme situations of imprisonment. Prisoners are taken off the ability to walk freely under the supervision. Yet, even under these circumstances, a person still retains choices about physical functions. So we can include that the complete absence of choice is impossible unless the person is dead.

So why a myriad of people complain that they have no choice. When someone choose a job he does not like, he claims that he have no choice. In fact, he also can choose another favorite job with less pay or do other things he likes. However, choosing favorite job means getting less money, which will bring into a hard life in a financial level. In his perspective, the merits in material life overwhelm the ones in spiritual life. Therefore, through the weight between both he excludes these feasible choices based on subjective views. So we have to admit that the absence of choice is very rare.  

Having recognized that the whole world is full of choices, by no means can we deny that our choices must base on certain conditions. Choices without any limit definitely bring us jeopardy. Firstly, we often fail to make the best choice because of the deficiency of resource. Secondly, when we make choices we can not fly in the face to laws. Otherwise, the world would drive to chaos circumstance. Of course, it’s believed that too many choices would bring another difficulty

So back to our topic, despite we often face with experience occasional feelings of having no choice, the statement that the absence of choice is impossible is basically correct.

Nowadays, you may not feel astonished when you hear someone complain that they do not have a choice to show their abilities. Do this mean that we are usually out of choice? In my opinion, I don't think so. On the contrary, I agree with the speaker insofar as the absence of choices is a very rare circumstance for the reason that we live in a world full of choices. What's more, what we need to do is just to choose a right one that is mostly proper to us.


In the first place, it is our human nature that guarantees our freedom of choice. No matter what kind of circumstance we are in, we always have some wills. When people are in a predicament, someone who want to struggle out of it, choose to solve problems and ultimately succeed, while some others who lose their hearts, prefer to do nothing and would not go any further. From this example, we can see that one will correspond to one choice. In addition, we are living a more democratic society than before, in which we have equal rights, express our views freely and choose what we want to do in the range of law. All in all, in our contemporary society, it is easier for us to express views and choose what we want and more convenient to practice what we would like to do.


In the second place, it is hard for us to say that we are out of choice in the current society since our life are laden with opportunities and choices. On one hand, our ancestors have left us many examples nearly in every field, from which we can learn some useful knowledge for making our own choice or even an present method for solving problems we are facing to. Such as environment problems, from history we find out that we human should protect our surroundings rather than develop our economic without concerning about our living conditions. What's more, by learning the stories of the exemplar, we have a choice of how we do when we in a difficult condition, just like them to insist on or just give up. So our predecessors have left us helpful knowledge for our choice.


On the other hand, we can make some decision,which is also a choice, on our own in some circumstance. There is no denying the fact that there are some situations that are very difficult for us to make a choice. However, does it means that there is no choice available for us? Absolutely not. The reason why we feel we have no choice is that we are afraid of making a choice or we already have some perspectives in our mind before choosing. For example, if your occupation is not your favorite though the salary is high, what will you? Are you going to change you work or keep on doing this work? Surely it is hard to make a decision because we are afraid of losing this high paid job and not sure if we can get a job better than this one. From this we can see that though it is hard to make a choice, we do have a choice. We just need choose one and take our responsibilities to do it without complains.


From what we have discussed above, we can safely draw a conclusion that our society is fraught of choice. The situation that we feel that we are out of choice does not represent we actually don't. We need to make a choice bravely and responsibly.

There was a time in the history that the supreme monarchical power ruled over everything, and people in that kind of society dared not to make their own voices heard and make choices about the life styles they preferred. But that is no longer the case nowadays. Someone say that the absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare. In fact, I agree with this assertion according to my knowledge area and personal experiences.

The life of human beings is actually full of choices, from daily trifles and significant events, both materially and spiritually. Due to the intensified communication, developed technology and the ceaseless pursuit of happiness and freedom of individuals, we are exposed of all conceivable kinds of goods and services. When hungry, one can choose to order a set of fast food sent to the door, or dress up and go to a luxurious restaurant to have a big meal; when bored, one can watch TV, play games, or chat with friends on the internet; when tired of living in an apartment, one can rent a mobile house and experience the popular RV life style.
And this is not only the phenomena in the level of material life. In a democratic society nowadays, people are endowed with the freedom to make complaints and change to a more acceptable and beneficial option, which is polar-different from the condition in the age of Renaissance, when the protesters of religious freedom were always described as infidels and put to stakes and sentenced to death by the church. Galileo and Bruno, the two famous scientists, are the victims of mental domination. Choices are like air surrounding us; we need them and actually make use of them nearly every single moment.

But even in a society so various and tolerant, we can always hear some people complain that the circumstance and the relative developments have left them with “no choice”. The fundamental reason for this statement in most cases is that people tend to give their attention only to the attractive and advantageous options, rather than the whole situation. All the creatures in the world have the intuition to see the positive aspects of things, human being is no exception. Therefore, the false appearance of absence of choices is actually the lacking of a better choice. In this sense, when we find ourselves in desperation, it is in fact much a dilemma, with the unconscious ignoring of less favorable selection that cannot live up to our expectations.

But I must acknowledge that there are indeed some things out of our ability to make a prediction and thus so make a choice. We can’t refuse death when it is the due time, and we can’t reverse the happening of natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis. We can’t make a choice of creation and extinction of species, and we can’t extort the course of history. Under other circumstances, social conventions, moral common sense and obligatory laws are the also factors influencing our freedom of choices. In addition, we are living a more democratic society than before, in which we have equal rights, express our views freely and choose what we want to do in the range of law. All in all, in our contemporary society, it is easier for us to express views and choose what we want and more convenient to practice what we would like to do.

In the second place, it is hard for us to say that we are out of choice in the current society since our life are(is) laden with opportunities and choices. On one hand, our ancestors have left us many examples nearly in every field, from which we can learn some useful knowledge for making our own choice or even a present method for solving problems we are facing to. Such as environment problems, from history we find out that we human should protect our surroundings rather than develop our economic without concerning about our living conditions. What's more, by learning the stories of the exemplar, we have a choice of how we do when we in a difficult condition, just like them to insist on or just give up. So our predecessors have left us helpful knowledge for our choice.

There is no denying the fact that there are some situations that are very difficult for us to make a choice. However, does it means(mean) that there is no choice available for us? Absolutely not. The reason why we feel we have no choice is that we are afraid of making a choice or we already have some perspectives in our mind before choosing. For example, if your occupation is not your favorite though the salary is high, what will you(do)? Are you going to change you work or keep on doing this work? Surely it is hard to make a decision because we are afraid of losing this high paid job and not sure if we can get a job better than this one. The procedure of study is constituted of choices one by one. When we graduate from high schools, we have to make a decision whether going on with study or quitting. Maybe some people will stop studying in schools because of the economic situation of his or her family. And a number of students will continue their learning with kinds of reasons, such as he or she can find a better job if finishing college study. This situation will repeat when he or she graduate from college, and when he or she get a master degree. The person who loves research will go on with PHD study, and the person who wants to be a business man or business woman will choose to work. So we really face a lot of choice when during our study.

Admittedly, there are kinds of choice during working. In business realm, there usually exist many hard times to decide whether to invest a new program or not. It may bring huge profits or result in financial loss if investing. How to decide it? Li Ka-shing, a wealthy and famous businessman in Hong Kong, has a view on investing that is never putting all eggs in a basket ever. With this theory, maybe, to some extent, it is much easier to make a business decision. Considering a case about promotion. Take Lynette, a fictional character on the American series Desperate Housewives, as example. She was once promoted to be in charge of a branch in another city by her boss, but she did not accept it. Many couples leave home early in the morning and return lately in the evening. They do not have enough time to look after their baby. So, generally, they will sent their children to their parents. So couples should take serious consideration about the choice.

I strongly support the speakers’ points to the rare situation in which we have been no alternative. However, whether one has an option or not is relative, it depends on one’s attitude, decision and how much power one makes use of. Also, in some circumstance, we have no choice but to conform and obey the rules, whether nature or society. Once we human have broken the constraint of rules, disaster might arrive one after another in rapid succession.

In our daily life, from our born to death, we have faced to choices whether it comes from life or work. In human’s minds, options have become a commonsense, for almost all circumstance is waiting for our alternative. When travelling through a long road, every time we have confronted the crosses, we have to make choices in order to arrive our destination, without choices, it means bog down and delay and we could never accomplish. Life is just like the journey, when confronting from the challenges and burdens, we have to have options to achieve our plan and schedule.

On the other hand, in some situations, when faced to difficulties and challenges, for one whose attitude is negative and who has not ever done his best to achieve his plan, it seems to have no choices but to obey the destiny. In contrary, for one who is filled with energy and have a positive life style, every challenge would be the bases for his success, burdens and difficulties means choices, success is for these ones. To illustrate this view, here is an example that is very persuasive. in Japanese ,each year the number of people commit suicide is so high all around the world because of the enormous pressures. However, factually why do many people still say that they have no other and only on choice to do something?
Firstly, every one as the member of our society could not do anything only following himself, and such ethical or social consideration or principle would inhibit one’s choice. Additionally even if one can do something without social or ethical restraints, and then just considering from his own, such as safety, interests etc, he has no more choice. There are many examples in our normal life, just take running the red light as an example. The red lamp lights at the street crossing when one is driving. What will he do? I think most people will stop and wait automatically. Why? The reason includes not only own safety, but his consciousness of social duty and morale, so he has no other alternatives to do but stop and wait. Of course, there still have other examples that one would not stop and run the red light at crossing, though perhaps traffic accident luckily does not be created, so bad social influence is created seriously, and thus to bring invisible stress to others and prevent them from other alternatives besides stopping and waiting.
Secondly, rapid developing science and technology spawns many rules that is convenient for us while complicate our life and inhibit our choice. Let’s suppose that one must finish 100 papers and it’s all the same. What will he do? Maybe what he thinks is not that to write those 100 times or 100 people write one time but to use computer or typewriter to finish the papers and then using printer to print them subconsciously. And another example: how to get to American or New Zealand or wherever you want to? You also want to go to there step by step except hikers? No, probably you must rack your brains and choose one most suitably from plains, ships or others. We humanity formulates many rules to improve and perfect the development of such tools as computer, web, cars etc. However, we must give up attempts and yields to these rules and assume these tools as only one choice.

I strongly agree with the speaker on the assertion that the circumstance without choice is very rare. In my opinion, the only circumstance that we are unable to make choice is the brain, the tool of making choices, cannot work well, for extreme examples, when death and be in coma. In most of time, the circumstance without any choice is just an illusion.


There are always circumstances that we have choices, but we cannot immediately find them. Especially when faced up emergency and accidence, it tends to be too nervous to make choices. There are always many people forget to call police when encounter crime. They are too scared and nervous, and even forget telephone number of the police. There are also some people seem to wait to die in a severe fire, because they are too desperate, and consider that they have no choice. In fact, when facing up such circumstances, just cool down and think a little more, many choices would come up.


Furthermore, we are limited by confines established by personal interests and stakes when to make choices. That is a mainly reason for sometimes we think there is rare choice in some special circumstance. For example, when a businessman or company trap in the commercial crisis or aspire to more benefits, they would tend to take any means to maintain or extend their profits. If they found goals cannot be reached by the legal way, then it seems the illegal behaviors are the only choice for them. In fact, most of the commercial criminal activities are generate by such kind of reason. Enron scandal is a good example. The leading energy corporation in America was unraveled of corporate fraud and corruption so as to maintain the company and executives’ benefits. Finally, they were unable to escape bankrupt and the punishment of law because they resist considering other legal choices to gain their goal.


Personal conviction or religion also affects people, which might reduce the choices when to deal with a matter. The man with strong conviction or religion would make have no choice but
persist in striving for his goal. For example, when faced up deafness, Beethoven never considered giving up music. Gandhi had never chosen to cease the civil disobedience for India independence. No matter how much hardship faced him. You also cannot anticipate Martin Luther King chose to stop resistance to racism when he was intimidated by some racists.
In sum, there almost always have choices in your lives except some rare special circumstances. When encounter absence of choices in dealing with a matter, a little more think or seeking for other’ s opinions would help you find many choices. That also tells us don't give up and desperate when faced up hardship that seems to involve no choices.
