According the the reading material, three theories have been given out to explain how the "great houses" were used. However, the speaker in the lecture show us three distinct points to illustrate his own opinion, which is strongly opposed to what have been stated in the reading material.
First of all, the writer of the reading material mentions that the "great houses" were purely use for resdential, because the houses is similar to the large well-known "apartment buildings" at Taos which many people have been living for centuries. At first glance, the statement appears to be somehow appealing. However, the speaker claim that this theory is unreasonable. He claim that the "great houses" just have the same outside apperence as the "apartment buildings" , the inside structuce is quite different. Further more, we could not find many fire place in the "great houses" which is needed for cooking. Hence this is entirely opposed to the writer's experctation.
In addiction, the speaker point out that the "great houses" should not be used to store the maize by emphsazing that we could not find any maize containers in the houses and many maize are still put on the outside floor. As a result, the speaker says that the theory stated by the reading material is indifferent and somewhat inaccurate when compared to what happen in real.
Finally, the speaker raise an issue that the broken pots we found in Pueblo Alto should be a kind of tools that used for build. Such discorveries could not lead to a conclusion that broken pots were used for special festival that stated by reading material.
In a nutshell, we can easily understand that the lecture are contradicted to those of the reading material. This is clearly demonstrates that the reading material is not persuasive as it stands.
首段:开头写的不错,reading和lecture结合起来,并且2个句子结构就刚好!
L1 According to the reading material
L2 the speaker in the lecture shows us
L3 which is strongly opposed to what have 这里前后助动词单复数是不是要一致了好?
.....不一一列举了
第二段: 应该重点放在fire places的反驳,而外观有点占篇幅了(因为原文就描述了一句from the outside the great houses look like ladder in native American apartment buildings.) 另外,没有提到 not enough room for more than 100 families这条论据~
L2: purely use for residence the houses are similar to
第三段: “many maize are still put on the outside floor” lecture中完全没有提到,是不是笔者误解了原文“why isn’t there more spoiled maize on the floor”, 同时lecture还提到没有发现Maize的论据没有在你的段落中找到哦~
The speaker questions all of the possiblities of the usage of the Chaco houses by providing evidences contraditory to the reading that have three competing theories. From the lecture, all of those theories are palusible.
First, the professor argues that Chaco great houses were actually not used as the large "apartment building" which could allow hundreds of people to live in. According to the assumption of the writer, there should be many fire places for daily cooking of all the people. Nevertheless, only few fire places were discovered there, even in the largest room there were only about 10 ones which could not support more than one hundred families. Moreover, there were not enough space for so large number of residents.
In addition, the lecture states that it was impossible for the Chaco structures to be functioned as food supplies storage. Basicly, grain maize needed to be stored with large containers for lasting a long period. However, from the excavation of the great houses, there was neither grain maize nor maize container uncovered. So there is no denying that the Chaco houses did not store any food supplies.
Finally, the speaker challenges the validity of the hypothesis in the reading of Chaco houses used as ceremonial centers. Besides the broken pots, many other things include construction tools and building stuff like sands and stones were also dig out from the Pueblo Alto mound. Therefore it is suggested that the deposits of the mound was merely a pile of trash. Undoubtedly, those broken pots could not be served for the ceremony rituals but also trash possibly from the construction workers' meals. As a result, the proposition of ceremonial center can not be proved.
听力部分说“Yet there were enough rooms in the great house for more than a hundred families, so the primary function of the houses couldn’t have been residential. ”
这应该是说灶头少不是因为空间有限造成的。
