208 "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."
Most people tend to judge a person they meet at the first sight. It's a justifiable and useful method for the reason that the way individuals look like and act often reflects their attitudes (opinion/position/standpoint) and interests, so as those of a society. However, we cannot assert without comprehensive observation.
To begin with, people's act generally shows one's attitude toward certain events. When noticing others are cheating in an examination, if one stands up and exposes the fraud, this means he/she abhors this behavior; otherwise one just tolerates it or doesn't even care. In the mean time, people's interests can be perceived through their dresses, makeup, or anything else they use, for only because they appreciate those staffs will they purchase them and utilize them. All these attitudes and interests constitute one's basic ideas and values - If we see one stops and waits when seeing a cow crossing the street, it implies (illustrate/illuminate) he/she honors this animal; if we advert a woman veiled when strolling in the shopping mall, it suggests her honesty of husband; if we notice a black man starts to dance and sing out of the blue, it means he is fond of that and doesn't fear to perform in public. In short, individual's act and look is determined by one's attitudes and interests, which make up his/her idea and value.
Thus, when most of citizens in a society own the same ideas and values, they become a culture which can be observed through civilians' appearances and habits - When seeing a group of people walking behind a cow, we know they are Indians since they cherish cow as saint; when adverting women together veiled with black silk, we know they come from Arab where women's faces are banned to be seen except their husbands; when noticing several black adults singing and dancing in a park, we understand they may Africa-Americans who are talented in art. In sum, we can approximately learn where people come from, what their culture is, whether they are friendly, or how they will react when facing certain events by analyzing their s outwards and manners.
Nevertheless, we could not make a conclusion without integral evidence. We should not regard all the Africa-Americans as violent and discriminate them just because recently some murders or arsons are committed by blacks; we cannot consider all Chinese as rude or mean since most cleaners are immigrated or smuggled from China. (In fact….) If we judge a nation or a culture at every moment we meet a single individual, it is unreasonable and may turns into prejudice.
In the final analysis, people's look, dress and act certainly reveals their attitudes and interests, which may advance into a culture. Accordingly, we can observe a nation's ideas and values through the appearances and behaviors of its people, while we cannot declare with elementary notions.
