arg1
In this argument, the arguer—vice president of Nature’s Way—concludes that Plaicsville should be the next region that they build their new store. To support this conclusion, the arguer cites the well business condition of the stores selling equipments related to sports and exercises and health club and the classes of training and aerobics. In addition, the arguer mentions that the program of “fitness for life” schoolchildren are required to participate would not only instill those children the benefits of regular exercise at an early age but also make them the anticipated customers in the future. However, a careful examination would reveal how groundless the conclusion is.

In the first place, the arguer fails to take the method that could bring profits to the company into account. As we all know, the profits of a store is the result of more incomes than expenses, however, the arguer does not provide us the expenses the store has to pay, such as the tax level,  the salary providing for the staff, related laws encouraging or inhibit health related food business, and the how much could it earns if NW builds a store there. With the absence of detailed information a company must concern and consider mostly, by no means could we evaluate the risks of new business nor could we believe that building a store there would bring us profits.

In the second place, the arguer fails to prove that the health food is what the citizens in Plaicscille care about. Although the running shoes and exercise clothes are well sold and health club and classed are welcomed by large population there, it does not have necessary connection with the brighter future of the store selling health food, since people have the custom of participating in sports and place a high value on regular exercise while never pay attention to the food they eat and enjoy in their daily life. Even though citizens living in Plaicscille care about the food they eat and value the health food, it also should be considered whether people could afford the price of health food since enjoying health food means increasing the burden of their live while buying a pair of running shoes occasionally and the fee health classes and training club people participate in is quite low may exert little influence on the cost and expense of common people. Also, other companies in that region that providing similar health food deserve the attention of NW, they may have already embrace much local customs and gained the credits of them by offering them high quality commodities and satisfactory and thorough services. Under such condition, without creative and effective methods that could gain the believe and confidence of local people, it would take a great risk of running new business there. Thus, the arguer fails to get the necessary connection between the possible success of new business and the evidence and data he offers.

Furthermore, in my opinion the program “fitness for life” is a double edged sword, propelling schoolchildren to take regular exercise without concerning the ideas of the children own may result in the abomination of exercise of little children, making those children refuse to take active in the sports or exercise in the future. Even though such program would improve the interests of schoolchildren participating in sports, it does not mean they would value the significance of health food, they may become basketball fans, football fans, or swimming fans, but never health food fan or supporters. A program with uncertain results and unnecessary relationship with heath food would not be the evidence prove the necessity of building new store there.

To sum up, the arguer does not provide direct and convinced evidence to support the certainty of making profits in Plaicsville. To support the idea of the arguer, he should get more direct information about the attitudes of local people towards health food, collect more details regarding current and possible competitors and their running condition and their role in this market.

Stone

TOPIC: ARGUMENT1 - The following appeared in a memorandum written by the vice president of Nature's Way, a chain of stores selling health food and other health-related products.

"Previous experience has shown that our stores are most profitable in areas where residents are highly concerned with leading healthy lives. We should therefore build our next new store in Plainsville, which has many such residents. Plainsville merchants report that sales of running shoes and exercise clothing are at all-time highs. The local health club, which nearly closed five years ago due to lack of business, has more members than ever, and the weight training and aerobics classes are always full. We can even anticipate a new generation of customers: Plainsville's schoolchildren are required to participate in a 'fitness for life' program, which emphasizes the benefits of regular exercise at an early age."

In this argument, the speaker recommends that they should build their next store in Plainsville. Experience, report and investigation are included; however, they are not convincing and can not support the recommendation.

First, the arguer unfairly assumes that their stores will be profitable in any areas where residents are highly concerned with leading healthy lives according to previous experience. Maybe the foods in their most profitable stores meet the local consumers' taste, and no doubt they are welcomed. Yet, the taste of civilians in Plainsville may be different and they don't like these healthy food. If this is true, the stores may not be profitable. Therefore, this experience is not persuasive.

Moreover, the report of Plainsville merchants cannot be used as convincing evidence. First, it is possible that the sales of running shoes and exercise clothing are not as good as they report; and the reports are just the merchants’ strategies. Second, even the running shoes and exercise clothing are sold well; this cannot guarantee people are interested in healthy foods. Maybe, they just think running shoes are better or more comfortable than other kinds of shoes when they are working. It is also possible that they like both exercises and foods which seem unhealthy.

In addition, although the club has more members than ever and the weight training and aerobics classes are always full, the author cannot be sure that these people will eat our healthy food. Maybe, these civilians all prepare meals themselves, and they may think those healthy foods in stores are not delicious.

Besides, the speaker says that they can even anticipate a new generation of customers. However, this anticipation is not based on solid evidences. The students are required to participate in the program don’t mean they like exercises or notice their health. They may be forced or they just join in for fun. Moreover, the arguer cannot guarantee that they will stay in Plainsville in future. Therefore, the anticipation cannot be relied on.

In sum, the recommendation is unpersuasive. To make it more convincing, the arguer should do more surveys and investigations.
祝各位顺利飞跃!

临暄的作业
The vice president points out in his memorandum that building next new store in Plainsville are profitable, and provides reasons that (1) there has many residents in Plainsville highly concerned with leading healthy lives;(2) sales of running shoes and exercise clothing are at all-time highs and the local health club has more members than ever, the weight training and aerobics classes are always full; (3) schoolchildren in Plainsville are required to participate in a ‘fitness for life’ and could be anticipated as a new generation of customers. It seems logical and sound at first glance, however, several flaws in the memorandum may deserve our attention.
First of all, the vice president neglects other possibility. Such possibility may include that these residents concerned with leading healthy lives like to make health food by themselves in home, or prefer buying them from other company because they are cheaper or have better quality than Nature’s way etc. Moreover, even if residents in Plainsville love health food and health-related products of Nature’s way, which is not meant that to build the next new store will have profit. What is possible is that the new store is not profitable because of higher cost of material, labor force, transportation etc.
Secondly, high sales of running shoes and exercise clothing at all-time and more members in local club may probably demonstrate nothing but that there are many residents like to do physical training. For example, the weight training and aerobics classes are always full perhaps because people need to shape body or lose weight; buying running shoes and exercise clothing may be because they comfortable. Hence, the evidence mentioned in this paragraph does not support the need to build a new store of Nature’s way, not to mention it is profitable.
Thirdly, we have good reasons to doubt that these schoolchildren will become customers of Nature’s way in future. Schoolchildren participating in ‘fitness for life’ program fails to show that they all would like to lead healthy lives, not to mention that they all buy health food or health-related products from Nature’ way when they grow up. Furthermore, this ‘fitness for life’ program only emphasizes the benefits of regular exercise at an early age, and it has nothing with health food or products. Perhaps, these schoolchildren can realize ‘fitness for life’, but could not realize to buy health food after grown-up.
To sum up, what the vice president wrote in his memorandum seems reasonable, but careful analysis reveals it is unconvinced for us. In order to support what he wrote, the vice president should provide more information concerning on how much residents in Plainsville spend on their health food and other health-related products from Nature’ way, amounts of residents love to buy health food, market competition etc.
有几个问题提出在此讨论下,这篇的主题是应该建一个新店呢,还是建一个新店会获利呢?这个有点纠结。字数总也写不多郁闷。

全文没有时间写了,先写了个汉语提纲

1.The following appeared in a memorandum written by the vice president of  Nature's Way, a chain of stores selling health food and other  health-related products.
