I am in favor of this opinion that education should take the individual need and interest of each student into consideration because of the common sense: interest is the best teacher. But when it comes to specific study in school, if the teachers "only" obey this rule, disadvantages of which far outweigh its advantages.
Education in school is designed to teach students everything necessary they should learn to ensure they have an intellectual life. So it is inevitable to set up a curriculum including a lot of different subjects ignoring whether the student like them or not. For instance, a student is majoring in physics with so much interest in this mysterious subject. And then I want to ask is it necessary to teach this student some literature or music? By the way, Albert Einstein likes playing violin very much. Yeah, the question is hard to answer considering what is the ultimately purpose of our education. In fact, education is a measure to make a student grow to be an all-round developed individual rather than "expert" as someone thinks. So an individual lives in this society with a need to communicate with others, a need to enjoy a wonderful party, a need to get care from friends and parents. So we must ensure every student is full of proper living skills as well as his interest contributing to making him live better. Get back to the question I mentioned above: whether it is necessary to teach a student majoring in physics music or not? I think people in growing numbers in this society today will give a "yes" answer as well as Albert Einstein did.
Even assuming this student hate learning music, literature, history or something about humanity, schools also should doubt about the possibility that makes sure everyone only learn his interested class. This is obviously impossible and absurd. Common sense tells me that every school just has a certain number of mathematics teachers, a certain number of physics teachers, a certain number of music teachers and so on. How a school can adjust classes to let every student has his requisite teacher.
Accordingly, education will be truly effective only when it is designed to meet the individual’s all aspects rather than just his interested ones. Whereas, students' interest is actually what the teachers and principals should take into account. They can design some extra classes to meet the need of some students' intense interest if the students really want to go further in this field. Learning from history, we can easily know that great person who plays an important role in art or science always has a great interest in his field. Can you image Vincent van Gogh does not like painting just want to live on it? Can you image Socrates does not like thinking about life and universe just want to get others' respect? And can you try to have an idea about Schubert does not like playing piano just want to have attention of women? Obviously, they are not those men considering money, life, woman at first. They just run in the way to pursue their interest and live up with this intrinsic interest. However, in today's society, it is unfortunate to see so much students learn their hated subjects just because which can give them well-paid positions in the future career. And most of them will find it is a pity to do like this when they are in old age.
In conclusion, what I really want to point out is that education should consider some factors about the students' interest. But this is not the ultimate meaning of today's education which is designed to meet everyone's real need in life and thinking style. Every school should balance the interest need of students and the enough diversity in classes to help them grow healthy.
