ISSUE56 - "Governments should focus more on solving the immediate problems of today rather than trying to solve the anticipated problems of the future."

People always depute the issue about the functions of governments. The speaker holds the point that governments are expected to put attention to the current immediate problems instead of the anticipated problems of the future. I agree with the one-sided claim partially. In my opinion, while it’s essential for goverments to devote efforts to solving the immediate troubles, the anticipated problems cannot be overlooked.

In our daily life, we need the immediate help from governments to solve urgent  problems in different fields. In big events, the officers on behalf of citizens to tackle with international problems, like multilateral trades and cultural exchanges, to seek more benefits for the country. With their efforts, friendly relationship is able to be built. As a result, our companys would have more chances to expand their business in other coutries, developing into international companies and more interesting cultural communications pour into our markets ranging from unique flavors to creative designs in clothes and architecture, adding more fun and beauties to our life. And if the officers fail to deal well with some issues, conflicts will occur, which leads to trade barriers, or even wars. In little cases, governments draw up laws and rules to guarantee an orderly society, say the food stocks which directly affect our life, the organization of the police which protect us from robberies and stealing. Therefore, officers can never delay solving problems because the immediate administration of governments towards things which happen everyday is the guard of the society.

On the other hand, the anticipated problems in the future shoud be taken into consideration by governments as well. Some problems may as well be found as early as possible and they will be more and more difficult to tackle with as they turns into big problems with time passing. To illustrate my viewpoint, let's look into the example of the environmental problem in China. During the early time of the People's Republic of China, numberous trees were cutting down and carried to home and abroad for economic profits due to the government's policy that production should be put in the first place. However, the rapid development has given rise to a series of serious problems now, especially the poor environment. Realizing the significance of green plants, people start to grow new trees. But it will take hundreds or more of years to re-plant a forest while they were destroyed in one or two months. It is because goverment failed to foresee the result of disappearance of forests before that we have to make much more efforts to deal with the current headache.

Actually, leaders tend to put focus on solving the immediate troubles rather that the future problems, for the consequences which can be seen in a short time will bring more supports from the public. However, today and tommorrow are not isolated but linked with each other. The considerations of measures taken for current problems today surely influence life of the future. For example, the policies on education ruled today aim to provide more chance of being educated to children, which will offer more talented citizens to contribute to build a better society in the future. Thus, the anticipated result of the future are unable to be overlooked. When faced with current problems, goverments should have a long-time sight.

In sum, a good government must fuction well both in solving the immediate problems of today and taking measures to the anticipated problems of the future. Avoiding paying extra cost in the future, governments should focus on solve the anticipated problems of the future as well as the immediate problems.
Silent day, day by day...
