TOPIC: ISSUE104 - "It is primarily through formal education that a culture tries to perpetuate the ideas it favors and discredit the ideas it fears."

WORDS: 571 TIME: 01:57:49)
Through which way one culture perpetuate the ideas it favors and discredit the ideas it fears, formal education or other way? I partly agree with the speaker that formal education may be the primary choice as regarding the culture is related to theory, art, or music.
However, when it comes to the aspect of value system, only through formal education is far away from adequate.

Admittedly, it is primarily through formal education that a culture tries to advertise itself when it comes to theory, art, or music. After all, formal education, differ from practical experience, is a more systematized way of coveting an idea. One kind of theory or art can be seen, generally, as a system, which needs to be explained in the integrity.
Other methods of spreading a culture pales in efficiency and fullness compared to formal education. One classic example is Confucius, one of the famous philosophers from ancient China. He provoked the theory of Confucian--called "Ru" in Chinese--by teaching his students and making them reciting in "Sishu" (classrooms in ancient China), he had taught 3000 students, approximately, in his entire life, and his theory has came down through hundreds of years. It indicates that formal education can help a culture perpetuate the ideas it favors successfully.

On balance, however, place formal education that a culture tries to preach ideas it supports and to cover ideas it fears at a primary position is far from adequate. For one obvious reason is that not everyone under specific culture has taken the formal education. One more vital reason is that when it comes to the value part of one culture, formal education cannot offer us much suggestion when one culture tries to persuade people to accept its idea. People learn to know whether one thing is right or not mostly through daily life and practical experience which formal education can actually do little to influence. On the other hand, mass media and role models play a more effective role in advertising one culture. First consider our uncrowned king--mass media. We may figure out the importance of mass media on spreading a culture through a spotted issue--plastic surgery. Many youngsters are crazy about getting slim or glamorous that they sacrifice health and wealth doing plastic surgeries. The ultimate one who should be responsible for the phenomenon is mass media, for it has overemphasized the importance of appearance and fitness. If the mass media ever take a balance attitude towards exterior and interior, people would have never been drawn such a huge attention on appearance rather than real stuff inside. All above indicates that mass media blazon forth one culture through controlling individual’s value system.

Next, consider role models who make a more significant effort on perpetuating the ideas its culture favors. Celebrities such as Bill Gates and George Colony have their own charity funds which can support special kinds of people who need help. It is the individual charm and paragon effect that can pull all the fans follow their role models do something beneficent to the helpless people in various facet. Thus, role models are placed an important role other than formal education on advertising one culture.

In sum, It is not only through formal education but many other ways such as mass media and role models that a culture tries to perpetuate the ideas it favors and discredit the ideas it fears. Moreover, every method applies for different facet of culture.

. One classic example is Confucius, one of the famous philosophers from ancient China. He provoke the theory of Confucian--called "Ru" in Chinese--by teaching his students and making them reciting in "Sishu" (classrooms in ancient China), he had taught approximate 3000 students in his entire life, and his theory has came down through hundreds of years.

On balance, however, place formal education that a culture tries to preach ideas it supports and to cover ideas it fears at a primary position is far from adequate, after all, not everyone under specific culture can take formal education. The vital reason is, when it comes to the value system level of one culture, formal education cannot offer us much suggestion when one culture tries to persuade people to accept its idea.
(这个论点太好了) People learn to know whether one thing is right or not mostly through daily life and practical experience which formal education can actually do little to influence. On the other hand, mass media and role models play a more effective role in publicizing one culture. First consider our uncrowned king--mass media. We may figure out the importance of mass media on spreading one culture through a spotted issue--plastic surgery.

Next, consider role models who make a more significant effort on perpetuating the ideas its culture favors. Celebrities such as Bill Gates and George Colony have their own charity funds to help special kinds of people. It is the individual charm and paragon effect that would pull all the fans follow their role models doing good deeds which can beneficial the helpless people in various aspects.

In sum, it is not only through formal education but many other ways such as mass media that a culture tries to perpetuate the ideas it favors and discredit the ideas it fears. Moreover, every method applies to different aspect of culture.
