The purpose of education is to develop the knowledge, skill, or character of students. School is a place where students can learn knowledge, skill systematically. However, someone acclaim that students should challenge the knowledge whatever they study. I hardly agree this statement. In my opinion, students should take different attitude to the knowledge what they learn at different stages.
I still remember when I was a college student, I had a dream: I find that I am a pupil studying in a classroom. The teacher teaches us to how to write English letters. This seems very simply because I have learned this basic knowledge already. All the children are listening carefully. Suddenly, a child asks the teacher a question: In the alphabet why the A is before B? The teacher seems a little at lose to this question. Maybe he does not know how to answer this question to his students at once. This question brings more questions. Some students ask why the letter should be like “A” not like “@” and so on. The class suddenly is fulfilling of challenges and the teaching can not go on. Around this point, I wake up. I am always thinking about this question, if we challenge all the knowledge ever the letter of alphabet or the Arabic numerals. How can we creative new knowledge? At primary education, the students should learn basic knowledge from letters to Arabic numerals. As children, they are full of curiosity to this world. We can notice that they are always keen on asking questions, needed adult to explain for them. In this period, they do not have the ability of bringing certain skepticism to knowledge they learn? In many countries people and their government have spent a lot of time and money to make study plan for these students and form their education system. Just suppose, if the students are questioning to the universal truth, such as multiplication table, how these students can learn higher knowledge.
Students in secondary and higher stage of education, they should get use to questioning the knowledge which taught to them not accepting it passively. Critical thinking can help us distinguish between opinion and fact and real understand fact through investigation. As a famous saying goes,” facts need practices”. Relative theory of Albert Einstein serves as a typical example. When Einstein was at 16-year-old, he learned that light is one kind of electromagnetic wave which move quickly. He raised assumption that was if people move as quickly as light, people can only see the wave instead of light. In those days, under the classical physics, physics was regarded a subject which developed perfectly. However, classical physics can not explain the phenomenon in electromagnetism. Einstein brought a critical think to these exist theory. He spent almost ten years to develop his relative theory which opens the new page of physics. When we have learned the basic knowledge and start to higher education, we should get use to skepticism.
In sum, the meaning of education is to help people learn knowledge, skill but the most important thing is let them know how to learn knowledge, understand the knowledge really through their investigation, and creative new knowledge. Education is a process we can not fulfill our target over one night. If we want to reach our goal, we should learn actively and learn to challenge after we know the basic knowledge. |
