My view to the issue is that facts are stubborn things in some realms. However, in many cases, facts can be altered by our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions.

To begin, in some fields, facts are stubborn things. They are objective and cannot be changed by our wishes and desires. For example, the sun is not the center of the universe. The earth travels around the sun. They are eternal facts and we are unable to alter them. Likely, we can find lots of theorems and axioms in science and society. They are essentials of the world and don't vary according to our wishes and desires.

However, facts are not always stubborn. In our daily life, 'facts', mentioned, are usually our ideas, or thoughts towards the real world. Sometimes these ideas and thoughts are limited by our experience and knowledge; and the facts in our mind may be not correct. For instance, 150 years ago, scientists took the thought that a molecule is the smallest particle. However, after 60 years, they found their theories were wrong. Actually, an atom is smaller than a molecule. So, the facts are changed as the development of our knowledge and experience. Moreover, in some cases, facts can be altered by our efforts and abilities, because these facts are temporary ones. For example, Jim is not a good student at the beginning. However, he spends more time in studies and becomes one of the best in his class. As we see, he changes the facts. When it comes to science, human visited the moon in the last century with the development of space technology, which made our ancestor’s dreams come true. We human beings cannot elevate one-ton-blocks; however, we invent machines which solve the problems. More examples like these can be proposed. In short, by our efforts and abilities, we can change some facts. Therefore, facts are not as stubborn as they seem. Sometimes they vary from time to time.

Since facts vary from time to time, we need to make the best use of them. On one hand, we have to quest those facts—knowledge, theorems and axioms, etc., in the progress of studying. This can help us to receive more correct ones. On the other hand, we should believe that we can change some facts. For example, the girl in the film ‘Homeless to Harvard’ finally changes her destiny through efforts. Furthermore, we can use those stubborn facts to create more profits. For instance, we now can generate electricity by using the gravity of water.

In sum, facts are not always stubborn things. Sometimes we should believe that they can be changed. And furthermore, we should make the best use of them.

Facts cannot be changed for people whatever they are robust or invalid, smart or awkward. Nowadays, we cannot deny that some people born very robust, but others born weak, some people are wholesome and others are maimed, which seems to be unfair. However, we cannot be too pessimism because we can change future facts which are decided by our inclinations to some extent. Firstly, it applies to individuals' qualities of birth. For instance, if a person born a blind, miserable faith is not he must face to. As I known, many blind men become masseurs or musicians. God deprives them of eyesight but award them more sensible touch and better hearing. They overcome many difficulties normal people do not go through, and experience many feelings normal people do not have. These blind masseurs and musicians have a different and happy life. Thus, we do should accept born facts but we can have future facts by our inclinations. Secondly, when we do works we can also change lots of things. For example, if a person behaves very awful in the presentation due to tension. His fail of presentation have become a fact, which he must accept, but is it all the things he can do? Obviously, he can amend his mistake. He can apply for another presentation and prepare well for it. Even though he cannot have another chance, he can summarize his experience and write a short paper which also is beneficial to him. Thus, facing with facts not accord with our inclination, we can amend it by numerous means.

不能改变即成的事实但是可以改变未来。两方面说的时候也是先说可以改变命运和可以改变将来，分别呼应了第2段和第3段。

To sum up, the statement that facts cannot be changed by our inclinations is proved by many events in our life. But we can also obtain future facts accorded with（according to?） our inclination.

整体而言，整篇文章是切合社会生活的一个方面来论述的，我也比较支持类似的论述方法，容易把问题分析透彻。但是读起来可能会很平淡。

While some people admit that people cannot alter facts since they are stubborn things, others believe that people can change the facts for the reason that facts keep changing all the time in human history. According to my observation, the effects of human's wishes, inclinations or the dictates of their passions to the changing of facts must be treated objectively. In other words, some facts cannot be altered by our subjective opinions, while some others may be influenced by those opinions. However, if we want to change a fact, we should work hard to achieve this goal rather than just thinking about it.

First of all, it is human nature to deny the things that do not work according to their minds. People want to establish his/her own reputations through denying his/her opposite values regardless whether those values are right or not. However, this does not mean that people can change the facts by this way alone since facts are relatively stubborn things. Though some facts have already changed in the human history no matter in the scientific realm or the societal realm, they are relatively right during that time when they were thought to be right. Therefore, I will discuss the human influence on the changing of facts in the following two aspects.

When it comes to the scientific field, it is obvious that the natural laws and principles would not change according to our wishes, inclinations, or the dictates of our passions. Even the changing in scientific fields such as change from the Geocentric theory to the Heliocentric theory, or transition from Newton's gravity to Enstern's relative theory, has already occurred, it is because of the needs of the scientific development rather than the human's subjective opinions. If not, can Copenicus build up the significant theory just by his thought that the sun is the center of our universe without dozens of years's observation, or can Einstein dispel the two black clouds around the physics without cogitation about his excellent throey? I do not think so for the reason that if those crucial accomplishments can be achieved so easily, everyone would be a celebrity, which contradicts with our history. In short, it is ridiculous for one to challenge the natural theories that are our basic foundations of our lives according to his/her wishes or inclinations.

However, when we refer to the societal realm, we may not be astonished that our wishes and inclinations can influence the changes of some societal facts. It is black peoples' wishes to have equal rights to the white ones that makes the American government to change its policy. It is the female movement struggling for the even station as the male that changes the attitude toward women in our society. It is our wishes for more freedom that brings us to nowadays' democratic society. Nevertheless, we should keep in mind that in order to achieve these advantages we have also devoted a lot of our energy. Though our wishes and inclinations can affect the changes of the societal facts, without our hard struggle, we would never achieve those goals.

To sum up, we should obey some facts that are the basis of our nature while we can claim our desires for changing some things that may not be suitable to our current society. Together with our practical action can we ultimately achieve the destination.

Facts are existing things or something can be inferred to exist. Whether facts can be changed or not depends on analysis of case-by-case basis. In some realms, like astronomy, facts cannot be altered by people's subjective views. While in other aspects, such as politics, environment, facts can be adjusted according to people's will. My point will be substantiated by the following discussion.


When we talk about astronomy nowadays, we all know the heliocentrism displacing
the Earth from the center of the universe is eternal. But handreds years ago, most of people believed that the Earth is the center. As soon as Nicolaus Copernicus, a great astronomer of the world, advocated his comprehesive thoughts of heliocentric cosmology, he was regarded as heresy. Several years later, Giordano Bruno, an Italian astronomer who accepted Copernicus's
heliocentric model, was burned at the stake by authorities. However, the fact that the Earth and fact planets revolve around the Sun did not vanish with Bruno's death, it was accepted by people in the following century. Hence, the objective fact in this example cannot be changed by people's subjective opinions.


However, sometimes facts can be altered by people's wishes, inclinations, or the dictates of passions in politics. Take the election of president for example. In America, a term of office of a president is four years. When a person takes in charge of the White House, the fact he or she is the president begins to exist. Whether he or she can renew his or her tenure of office depends on people's will. If a president makes a lot of progress during his or her first term, perhaps he or she will get another tenure, such as Franklin D. Roosevelt, a famous President of the United States. If a president impresses citizens badly, he or she may be driven to leave the office, like Richard Nixon, the only President to resign the office of the United States. Therefor, in politics, facts can be altered.


Admittedly, facts can be adjusted according to people's will in the aspect of environment. As the developing of industrialization, the pollution of air and rivers becomes more and more serious. This is an existing fact which we all have realized. And we can tell much more as our knowledge level is higher and higher about what damages the nature would bring to us if the contaminate becomes worse. So people take numerous of measures to protect circumstances. We forbid factories to exclude foul water into rivers, control the number of cars driving in street in order to reduce exhaust, Plant trees in barren mountains for the purpose of keeping them from being deserts. After doing such things, the surroundings is indeed developing in a good direction which is people's inclinations. Hence, facts can be adjusted in this case.


To sum up, although facts are stubborn things, if we analyze issues according to various background and perspective, whether facts can change or not with people's will can be illustrated clearly.

The speaker holds that facts which are aptotic could not be changed by inclinations, wishes and dictates. Undoubtedly, we should admit this point. However, our thoughts would be separated from each other, and when confronting the same facts, we could have unique methods to deal with facts. Thus even if the facts could not be changed, we should take an active measure to face facts.


I admittedly support that the fact must be something which would not be transformed with our thoughts and subjective wishes. Since in the world they exist objectively, everything beyond them seems so little that there not exists enough power changing them. So we must conform them but to contort and even try to change or break them. When human trying to change them, on the one hand these human would be treat as a joke, on the other hand, when breaking them, human would be chastised and even go to a disaster. For instance, during the period of world war two, although Chinese is the final winner, yet the invading of Japanese brings us a disaster when they have killed hundreds of thousands of Chinese. However, they Japanese actually do not admit the fact that the people all around the world must believe. With cheating the history, their descendants would misunderstand it, they must be considered as a joke and should be punished.



However, there exists more or less some differences between persons’ thoughts when confronting with the same thing, differences would take place. Just as the saying goes:” 1000 readers may have 1000 different hamlet in heart.” Hence the consideration of facts would be unique so that road and method between two persons would be different, then the life might be opposite. It is how huge that the competition of the personnel market of American during the economics recession, and so many people have lost their jobs, thus the pressure on the graduates from the university is so bigger than that before this depression that these students could not undertake. However, when confronting the burden along their life road, it exists two kinds of persons who have kept separated attitudes toward the life or work. A part of them holds a positive thought, in contrast, others have faced the facts with pessimistic behavior. So it has turn out to be that the final success is for the first one, failure for the other one.

The speaker asserts that we cannot change facts by our wishes, for they are stubborn things that are persisting. This notion can hold water under some circumstances, but it is not comprehensive to cover every possibilities. Actually, as the definitions of facts are varied according to different cases, this claim is not always right and persuasive.

Admittedly, this assertion is true when “facts” are referring to historical events that happened already, or scientific truths that have existed in this word objectively. They cannot be altered or retorted by the force of human beings. For history, even though the historical records is taken down by people and therefore cannot avoid the mix of personal feelings and judgment, the truth itself can’t be changed. Just as the invasion of Japanese Army into China during the WWII, despite the truth that Japanese is always trying to cover the truth of invasion in the text books of their young students, the history leaves traces that can sufficiently serves for proof in the arguments between the governments of the two countries. As for the realm of scientific discoveries, the facts are always defined as the operating law on this planet. If it is the design of God, no matter how our wishes and inclinations are, the truth will reveal itself finally. When the churches of Italy used the theory of geo-centricity to control the mind of citizens, Bruno pointed out that sun is the center of galaxy. Although he is sentenced to death because of his propaganda of truth, his theory has proved to be true with the development of astronomy. Therefore, some facts, including objective disciplines and history that already happened, can’t be altered by people’s subjective opinions.

When the definition of facts is closely connected with people’s present activities, however, we can change the pattern and course of things according to our wills. With the aspiration of free and better-off living conditions, there appeared many peasant uprisings in Chinese federal dynasties. With the pursuit of equal treatment and right between white people and colored citizens, Martin Luther King lead the protest against many unequal rules of the society, and spare no effort to eliminate racial discrimination in the US. With the dream of seeing the world beyond the earth, people designed the first airplane, the first satellite, and the first space ship. Armstrong stepped onto moon and changed the destiny of all earth citizens. The willing to change the status quo is always the compelling force to make improvement and progress. Dream is like the lighthouse in the sea, leading sailors to get the dreamland that they never used to be. It should be always kept in mind that only if we have the desire, can we change the present reality and be different.

So back to the assertion, some objective facts cannot be changed, but we can control what we are doing nowadays with faith and dream in heart. We can’t forget the earthquake happened in Wenchuan, China in the year 2009. As ordinary people, we can’t stop the serious attack of nature and avoid the heartrending pain after the disaster, but we can devote our efforts as much as possible to rebuild the city afterwards. This is the best example, that although we are powerless to decide nature course, we are forceful to control our own destiny.
