ISSUE243 - "The true value of a civilization is reflected in its artistic creations rather than in its scientific accomplishments."
To the majority of people, the tined science seems recondite and we seldom build a close connection between it and our own life while both arts and artists constitute a significant part of our discussion. I concede that we are sometimes more familiar with arts rather than high level science and think of artistic creation the moment we talk about the civilization. However, the buried effect of science to sustain and promote the civilization is undeniable and deserves the equal estimation just as the arts do.
To begin with, artists are the group who are sensitive to social unrest and express the trend through their artifacts. The arts include various sorts such as music, painting, sculpture, literature and so forth. All these permeate in people's daily lives and thus unfold the dark side of contemporaneous society and disseminate the new notions. The world-famous movement, the Renaissance, which stemmed from the sprout of capitalism and its collision with the obsolete feudal monarchy, made people aware of the importance of humanism and the confinement from conventional religion to social persistent progress. During that period, artists create a large amount of immortal works and encouraged people to introspect into the correct path to head for. In this way, people became more open-minded and attained more freedom which contributed to the simultaneous prominent achievements in science. The artists’ keen insight into social status quo gives rise to people’s struggle against social system out of date and the exploration towards one that is salutary to liberation in minds so ultimately enhances civil improvement. Thus, creation in arts works acts as a vital approach to evaluate a civilization.
It is no doubt that artistic creation plays a starring role in civil progress but comprehensive reflection reveals that arts cannot be isolated from science accomplishments. The techniques improving with each passing day provide us with more convenience which means adequate leisure and better working condition for artists to devote to their careers. Intellectual machines reduce demand for manual work and save us plenty of time to concentrate on pursuit for arts and more extensively the civilization. For instance, due to the advent of paper, the vehicle which conveys the words is more portable and a piece of work can impress its influence in a much broader scope. Today, the digital media participate actively in the spread of arts too. The latest songs are available anywhere if your computer can receive a signal to surf the Internet. The digital movie like recently-released Awendano, brought to us a visual feast and attained more potent expression on its gist. Besides, thanks to advanced techniques, the ancient works and precious civil heritage could be reserved and passed to another generation. Considering all these, science shall be regarded equally crucial in assessing a culture.
Let us take a look at the long history to find some hints in the inherent relationship between arts and science. The ever most powerful nation in the world, the ancient Greece owned not only the highest level of science but also the splendid accomplishments on arts at that time. A travel to Greece will be unforgettable for its gorgeous architectures, sculptures and paintings. And again during the Renaissance, the catalyst of plenty of great minds, a genius like Vinci sprang up. He himself could be strong evidence in support of the perfect combination of arts and sciences. That is because the science ensures the prerequisites for arts when revolution in arts inspires the corresponding echo in scientific realm. In brief, the interaction between the two will prove to be better than adding up the two separately.
General speaking, the arts and science are of the same significance in presenting the true value of civilization. A civilization would not be as abundant as it is now if either of the two is undermined and the excessive emphasis on either side is unreasonable. |
