Issue16: Although many people think that the luxuries and conveniences of contemporary life are entirely harmless, in fact, they actually prevent people from developing into truly strong and independent individuals.


In nowadays, modern facilities, such as washing machine, air condition, bring us a lot of convenience. I concur with the assertion that the luxuries and conveniences of contemporary life make our life much easier. However, they can prevent people from developing into truly strong and independent individuals if using them improperly.


The comfortable and convenient life bring a lot of benefits to people. Imagining one living in a big house, he or she does not need to do the cleaning, washing, cooking, and can engage in the things he or she likes. For example, many rich people hire workers to do housework so that they can concentrate on their business. It saves much time for the people, and helps them a lot.


However, luxury and convenience life may make people lack of dependence. As a newspaper reported, many housewives who married rich husbands felt bored that they had nothing to do. If asked them to go out for work, they said that it was too hard to suit the world outside. Actually, it is not too hard to suit the society, but no brave to change the status. Once the family becomes poor, maybe they cannot bear. Another example happened many years ago. Once a camp consisted of Chinese children and Japanese children held a activity walking ten miles on foot.
It was found that most of Chinese children could not continue with the walking after one mile, while Japanese children insisted on and finished the walking. The reason was that most Chinese children were begotten, and they were dote too much by grandparents so that if they wanted to eat, grandparents would feed them; if they wanted to put on clothes, grandparents would help dress them. Yet, Japanese children had been taught to be independent since they were born.


In addition, luxury life may make people become weak. Several months ago, there was a news about a dude, a son of a millionaire in Hangzhou, a city in east China, killed a person when driving a racing car with a gang. After the accident, the dude hided, and was afraid to take the responsibility. Just as a famous philosopher said that a person who does not dare to be responsible is a coward. The luxury life has made the dude become cowardly. Without strong will, many people will live their life in a muddle-dead way.


On contrary, people who grow up in adversity may become stronger and more independent than ordinary people. Adversity can strengthen will, foster independent personality. Take Zhang Haidi, a writer with disabled in China, for instance.
She was paralyzed when she was five years old due to getting polio which was a fatal strike to a youth. But she never gave up, she learned all by herself, and becomes a national wide known writer. When she gives speeches, she always talks about being strong and independent. The poor situation creates what Zhang Haidi can be today.


To sum up, although luxury and convenient life bring a lot of benefits to people, they make people lack strong will and independent personality which may be fostered in adversity sometimes.

With the development of our society, it is obvious that our life becomes more and more luxury and convenient. From this point of view, some people argue that the luxuries and conveniences of our contemporary life prevent people from developing into truly strong and independent individuals. However according to my observation, the luxuries and conveniences have little adverse effects to our independence. On the contrary, they enhance our independence in current society.

In the first place, there is no denying the fact people benefit a lot from the development of society, in other words, our life becomes much better for the reason that we can enjoy a much more luxury and convenient life. It is human's nature to pursuit a better life over the span of history. We have improved our life from the agricultural society to the industrial society and to now the digital society. It is easy to see that our life has become more luxury and convenient since those two aspects of life, luxuries and conveniences, are the representatives of a better life. With the help of automobile and the plane, we can travel around the world; with the assistance of computers and Internet, we can communicate with our friends wherever they are; with the using of modern technologies and materials, we can live in a more comfortable, strong and luxury house(这几个排比看上去赏心悦目。在你文章里经常能看到排比啊，学习了). In short, the luxuries and conveniences do bring us a better life and make individuals ' activities easier that the past.

However, some people think that because they have made people interact with each other more frequently than before, it is not good for individuals' independent thinking process. In my opinion, people with this kind of view mistakes the interactions between(among) people as dependence on each other. In fact, this kind of interaction does few negative effects to the independence of individuals. On the one hand, people can act more independently in the everyday life. While in the old time our ancestors had to work together to hunt animals for food, now it is easy for us to get a hamburger from KFC on our own（这个论证不够充分）. What's more, some works that must be done by many people such as making a car can be done by only several individuals nowadays. On the other hand, with the luxuries and conveniences, we can think more on our own than before since we can get enough information for supporting our thinking on the Internet. From this point of view, the luxuries and conveniences do a lot to help us become truly strong and independent individuals rather than do harm to our individual development.

What's more, we should also keep in mind that we cannot abuse these luxuries and convenience for the reason that it is easy for us to indulge in these things, become content with what we have and ultimately affect our development. In the history of China, many emperors of the old dynasties who done nothing to his nations except abusing his power for fun were eventually stepped down from their stages by the populace. Therefore, we must keep discontent with our current situations and make more progress with the help of what we have now.

I concede that luxuries and conveniences of contemporary life prevent some abilities of our bodies from developing stronger. However, just as many people think, in my opinion, luxuries and conveniences are harmless. Human beings become truly strong and independent individuals as the advancement of the ability they use tools.

To begin with, as the development of science and technology, our life becomes more and more luxurious and convenient. However, these luxuries and conveniences make us lazier than before. For example, few people climb stairs when a building is equipped with elevators. Yet, climbing stairs is an effective exercise. So, these inventions actually lead our body to be weaker. What's more, our abilities in some other aspects may also be reduced since we use high-technical tools. For instance, after we own a computer, we do less calculation ourselves. As time goes on, our ability to calculate complex problems may disappear. Therefore, luxuries and conveniences of contemporary life prevent some capabilities of our bodies from developing stronger.

However, as people's life becomes luxurious and convenient, they have more spare time, because they don't have to waste them on some staffs. For example, after telephone was invented, people can directly chat with their friends 1000km away. They don't have to travel there, and so that save lots of time. Therefore, people's efficiency is increased greatly, and they have more time than before.

Since people have more spare time, they can consider doing some useful things. For example, one can attend a training center to learn more skills, like computer and foreign language. He can also enter a college or enroll in a graduate school to receive some scientific or technical knowledge. Anyhow, people can arrange the spare time in many ways. Actually, most people spend their spare time in learning skills to apply tools and creating new tools. When it comes to technology, scientists invent new vehicles, like planes. When we refer to economics, economists establish new models to anticipate the development of national economy. By these new tools, human beings become stronger and more independent than before. For example, we can not lift one-ton-blocks, however, the machines we invent can. We can not fly, whereas planes can. So, the luxuries and conveniences don't reduce our abilities. Our capabilities in using tools are greatly improved in this progress and we human beings become more stronger.

In sum, although luxuries and conveniences of contemporary life may low prevent our body from developing stronger. However, we have more time to improve our ability to use tools, and by that, our human beings become stronger and more independent.

The speaker holds that conveniences of modernized life would keep human from progressing to truly strong and independent. I agree with this point in some particular situations. However, the advancement of technology would increase people’s leisure time and moreover through the power of it, can human solve the immediate problem, hence the quality of life could be improved. Thus the conveniences of technology would benefit our life more rather than delay our development.

I admittedly agree conveniences would delay human’s developing into truly strong and independent. Since, while the development of technology has brought us conveniences, the disadvantages have also been obvious and it could be burden to prevent development of human. Since more and more dependences on technology lead the ability of humans to deteriorate. Hence in some circumstances, technology would do a seemingly clever thing which turns out to be a foolish one instead. For instance, the population of fat person accounts for a large proportion of total population, While it is in American that development of science is the most advancing, and almost everything in its major cities could represent convenience and comfortable. However, through using the convenient tools, human have becomes more indolent. Such technology tools as vehicles and elevator have not only impelled the progress of human, but reduced human’s motion nature which ultimately leads human to be fat. Thus the disadvantages of science advancement should be taken measures to prevent.

However, these conveniences have made more contributions to our daily life and work rather than considering as disadvantages. From the time when human first started to study the science, it is to resolve their daily life that is the primary goal of study. Since the purpose of work is to live but not the opposite relationship that human has lives for work. So for the purpose of decreasing the burden of work so that increasing quality of life, science and technology come out, and its productions help human improve efficiency and leisure time then live a better. Every time we have come into the library, we could find the convenience and comfort to search what we want.
