TOPIC: ISSUE26 - "Most people would agree that buildings represent a valuable record of any society's past, but controversy arises when old buildings stand on ground that modern planners feel could be better used for modern purposes. In such situations, modern development should be given precedence over the preservation of historic buildings so that contemporary needs can be served."

What is the right attitude of the modern people toward the old buildings, especially when the old buildings in the way of constructing the new mansions and other kinds of mercantile skyscrapers? In my point of view, we should preserve the old building and find another way to meet the land need of the modern society.
We have to protect the old building, as they are the history in the tone which is more vividly than the words in the history text books. Only when people in front of the old building with certain historical meanings, can they get a profound understand of the certain stage of that time. Take the Great Wall of China as an example, people can not imagine what a great project unless they come to the locate.
For another thing, the old buildings are symbols of many ethoses; as a result the value of them is far more weight any modern buildings. The Statue of Liberty is the symbol of the American spirit just as the Great Wall represents the ethos of the Chinese people and the pyramid to the Egypt and so on. So we have the responsibility to guarantee the entity of them.
Further more; once the old buildings are ruin, they can never be recovered, no matter with what sophisticated technology. Although people can make a copular of them, the recreated one lost the original significance of the pristine ones. The old buildings were built in a certain time with a certain background, or in another words they were connected with a certain historical events, as a result, they were regard as the meaningful ones. This reflected by a famous saying which I paraphrased: there are some items in the word can not be replaced.
When it comes to the controversy of the old buildings and the development of the modern cities, I think we can get other methods to settle this problem. Firstly, the old buildings can be conserved as a resource of developing the tourism, which is a new economic increasing mold in many countries; secondly, we can make a better design for the further development of the modern cities. That is to say to built many buildings similarly to the old ones with the modern function. In this way, we can not only make our cities compatible with the old buildings but also increase the culture atmosphere of them. In fact there are some cities with many old buildings practiced this mold. As a result, if we do our best, there is no contrary between the economic development and the old buildings protection.
As all analysis mentioned above, it is necessary to protect the old buildings, even in front of the challenges raised by the development of the modern cities. What more, there are many options in front of us to conserve them as well as pursuit the further economic development.
