TOPIC: ISSUE40 - "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

WORDS: 531

Do scholars and researchers need to meet the need of the larger society or just pursue their individual interests no matter they are how idiosyncratic may seem? I partly agree with the speaker's contention that researchers and scholars have no need to consider the benefit to our society at the beginning, but just research what they desire to discover or thoroughly understand. However, the important meaning of their works is how, what and which contribution would them make to the society, so they should consider them eventually.

To begin with, people would like and could do better when encounter the thing of their own interests, let alone the abstract study which scholars and researchers research. This is similar to our education, why
should we choose our subject before study at university or college? Yet it partly for the reason that restrict and draw a blueprint to our career in the future. But the more important destination is to meet the students interests in order to them could study well in the school. Why choose favorite subject could they study well? It is also familiar to a simple matter in our daily life: were people have patience to wait one hour in the bank to draw cash, they may merely have half an hour at telephone station to pay the fee for the reason that bank link to their most interests-get money, so people could have more patience to do things about that. Many successful inventions and discoveries are all on the basis of their inventor’s own interests may due to the same reason from common people. Image that if we force a computer scientist to study psychology, how could he have interests and how could he make any value work about this area?

Moreover, before each new breakthrough has been invented, that idea may usually be think of unusual or even idiosyncratic, but in fact, just due to those distinguished notions, researchers enable to invent or discover some new things. For instance, in the twenties, could people image fly on the sky and even pass through
atmosphere to the outer space? That contention may be
thought idiosyncratic or even unbelievable. Nonetheless, the inventions of plane and spaceship exactly be invented by those seem unusual researchers. If they do not research their individual interests just because their new notion seems unusual or idiosyncratic in temporary, our society cannot develop at this
level. May we cannot watch television, search Internet, use telephone and may even go anywhere on foot.

While it would be tempting to concede that whether scholars and researchers’ works make a contribution to the larger society is the vital standard to weight their works. But the pinpoint of that contribution not lie in their unusual notion at first. It is pivotal to scholars and researchers to think about how could they applying their idiosyncratic idea to better our life or improve our society. That is more important than the notion, and if they cannot clear that thing, they could not make any contribution to the larger society.

Therefore, I strongly agree with the speaker's claim that scholars and researchers should pursue their individual interests no matter they are how unusual. However, after they begin to pursue their personal interests, they
should concern about how those works could make contributions to our society.

TOPIC: ARGUMENT137 - The following appeared in an editorial in the Mason City newspaper.

"At present, Mason City residents seldom use the nearby Mason River for any kind of recreational activity, even though surveys of the region's residents consistently rank water sports (swimming, fishing, and boating) as a favorite form of recreation. Since there have been complaints about the quality of the water in the river, residents must be avoiding the river because they think that it is not clean enough. But that situation is about to change: the agency responsible for rivers in our region has announced plans to clean up Mason River. Therefore, recreational use of the river is likely to increase, so the Mason City council will need to increase its budget for improvements to the publicly owned lands along the Mason River."

This editorial concludes that the Mason City council will need to increase its budget for improvements to publicly owned lands along the Mason River due to the increase the recreational use of the river. To support this recommendation, the author assumes a premise that the use of the river will increase attribute to resident not prefer to go to this river only for the reason that the water in this river is not clean enough and the agency has announced plans to clean up the river. Also, the author
further prove that surveys point out that region's residents consistently rank water sports as a favorite form of recreation but their residents seldom use the nearby Mason River for any kind of recreational activity. However, this argument suffers a series of logical problems and critical flaws, and it is therefore wholly unpersuasive.

To begin with, the author only on the basis of the simple reason that the agency may clean up Mason River to anticipate the use of the river will increase. However, would they really
clean up the river
This is just one of their plans in the future. Moreover, even though they really realize, can they truly clean the water enough to resident swimming, fishing and boating? Were the water is too dirty to clean up, how about?

Secondly,
the author’s conclusion from the result of surveys is also problematic. The region's residents only said water sports as a favorite form of recreation, but it does not means that they would like to play them. Maybe they prefer to watch television at home or play computer game rather than go out swimming or so forth.

Thirdly, even though the arguer could substantiate all the errors as I mentioned above, the author also arbitrarily assumes that the reason why residents dislike using the nearby Mason River is the poor quality of the water in the river. Perhaps there are some wonderful pools that people could swim and some beautiful parks that residents could fish and boat in the city.

Finally, the author's recommendation is also unreasonable and arbitrary even if the use of the river will increase in the future. Would the publicly owned lands along the Mason
River need to improve? How much money would it cost? How long would the publicly owned lands improve finish? Those are also important to the council to consider at first.

In conclusion, this argument cannot be taken serious as it stands. To better evaluate it, the author needs to reaffirm the agency would really clean up Mason River and the residents are really prefer to do water sports but not just desire. Moreover, the author also needs to support that the residents dislike the Mason River only for the dirty water, but not other reasons. Besides, the author also have to consider that the real condition and other factors if they increase its budget for improvements to the publicly owned lands along the Mason River

Do scholars and researchers need to meet the need of the larger society or just pursue their individual interests no matter they are how idiosyncratic may seem(no matter how idiosyncratic they may seem)? I partly(你在however前后已经把题目观点分成两部分了,所以这里就应该不是部分了) agree with the speaker's contention that researchers and scholars(they) have no need to consider the benefit to our society at the beginning(这个beginning 怎么理解啊,和later的界限是什么呢), but just research what they desire to discover or thoroughly understand. However, the important meaning of their works is how, what and which contribution would them (they) make to the society, so they should consider them eventually.

To begin with, people would like to(觉得LZ很喜欢并列地把一些成分放在一起,还比如上段的how, what, which,但是注意不要漏掉成分哦,感觉上段那就很别扭) and could do better when encounter the things of their own interests, let alone the abstract study which scholars and researchers research.(前面的主语是people,这里let alone后面省略了重复的成分,所以应该和people的地位一样,study显然不行) This is similar to our education, why should we choose our subject before study at university or college? Yet(但是?怎么理解,admittedly) it is partly for the reason that restrict and draw a blueprint to our career in the future. But the more important destination is to meet the students(’) interests in order to(for) them could(to) study well in the school. Why choose favorite subject could they study well? Image that if we force a computer scientist to study psychology, how could he have interests and how could he make any value work about this area?

Moreover, before each new breakthrough has beenbeing invented, that idea(哪个idea?) may usually be think of as unusual or even idiosyncratic,(;) but in fact, just due to those distinguished notions, researchers enable(are able ) to invent or discover some new things. That contention may be thought as idiosyncratic or even unbelievable. Nonetheless, the inventions of plane and spaceship exactly(放这不太恰当哈) be invented by those seemed unusual researchers. If they do not research their individual interests just because their new notion seems unusual or idiosyncratic in temporary, our society cannot develop at this level. Maybe we cannot watch television, search Internet, use telephone and may even go anywhere on foot.

This editorial concludes that the Mason City council will need to increase its budget for improvements to publicly owned lands along the Mason River due to the supposed(这也是作者推想的)increase the recreational use of the river. To support this recommendation, the author assumes a premise that the use of the river will increase attribute to resident not prefer to go to this river only for the reason that the water in this river is not clean enough and the agency has announced plans to clean up the river. Also, the author further prove that surveys point out that region's residents consistently rank water sports as a favorite form of recreation but their residents seldom use the nearby Mason River for any kind of recreational activity. However, this argument suffers a series of logical problems and critical flaws, and it is therefore wholly unpersuasive.

To begin with, the author (谓语动词哪里去了?)only on the basis of the simple reason that the agency may clean up Mason River to anticipate the use of the river will increase. However, would they really clean up the riverThis is just one of their plans in the future.(对啊,是计划之一,说明会打扫啊。批驳理由不好) Moreover, even though they really realizerealize什么?), can they truly clean the water enough tofor resident to take swimming, fishing and boating? Were the water is too dirty to clean up, how about?

Secondly, the author’s conclusion from the result of surveys is also problematic.(这个万能TS放在这,其实没有作用,太虚幻了) The region's residents only saidtake water sports as a favorite form of recreation, but it does not means that they would like to play them. Maybe they prefer to watch television at home or play computer game rather than go out for swimming or so forth.TS空虚,段末也没有总结)

Would the publicly owned lands along the Mason River need to improve? How much money would it cost? How long would the publicly owned lands improve finish? Those are also important to the council to consider at first.

In conclusion, this argument cannot be taken serious as it stands. To better evaluate it, the author needs to reaffirm that the agency would really clean up Mason River and the residents are really prefer to do water sports but not just desire. Moreover, the author also needs to support that the residents dislike the Mason River only for the dirty water, but not other reasons. Besides, the author also have to consider that the real condition and other factors if they increase its budget for improvements to the publicly owned lands along the Mason River既然body里面没有论证beside后面的信息,结论中就不要提了哈。
