TOPIC: ARGUMENT15 - The following appeared in a newsletter offering advice to investors.
"Over 80 percent of the respondents to a recent survey indicated a desire to reduce their intake of foods containing fats and cholesterol, and today low-fat products abound in many food stores. Since many of the food products currently marketed by Old Dairy Industries are high in fat and cholesterol, the company's sales are likely to diminish greatly and their profits will no doubt decrease. We therefore advise Old Dairy stockholders to sell their shares and other investors not to purchase stock in this company."

In this newsletter, the arguer cites over 80 percent of the respondents desire to reduce fats and cholesterol, and the food products marketed by Old Dairy Industries are high in fat and cholesterol. Therefore, Old Dairy stockholders should to sell their shares and other investors not to purchase stock in this campany. However, this argument contains several logical flaws, which render it unconvincing as it stands.
To begin with, the arguer indicates that a rencent survey indicated over 80 percent of the respondents disire to reduce fats and cholesterol. Yet, we are not informed the information about these respondents. It is entirely possible that these respondents are those who has high-fat and cholesterol, or perhaps the number of respondents are very limit, If this is the case, the recommended acquisition would not convince me.
In the second place, the arguer assumes that the company's sales are likely to diminish greatly and their profits will no doubt decrease. Accordingly, the argument rests on the assumption that many of the food products currently marked by Old Dairy Industries are high in fat and cholesterol. Maybe those people who wants to be fat need the foods by Old Dairy Industries, or perhaps other people who doesnot care about intake of foods containing fats and cholesterol. Without ruling out these and other alternative explanations, the arguer cannot bolster the recommendation.
In sum, the argument mentioned above is not based on well-grounded evidence and sound reasoning, neither of which is dispensable for a conclusive argument. In order to draw a more convincing conclusion, the arguer should provide more information about the respondents such as age, healthy condition, we also need to know the more information about the foods sales. To evaluate the argument better, the arguer should informed regarding whether the foods contains high fat and cholesterol so that poeple would not purchase it.
