ISSUE147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
Nowadays, with the explosion of science and techonology, more and more focus are attracted on the issue whether tradition and modernization are mutually exclusive. I concede that in some conditions, tradition seems to be challenged by modernization, but I hold that they are not absolutely incompatible in such fields as arts, science.
There is no denying that some conflicts lie in our society between tradition and modernization. We can find modernization is threathening traditions. In the past decade, more and more unmechanized workshops have to go bankrupt due to the emergence of modern group companies, which own much more market shares with the competition of cheaper mass productions. As a result, individual innovations are flooded by the fast and constant duplication of models in the assembly lines, one main characteristics of mordernization. It also happens in our daily life. Keyboard is gradually replacing pen with widely spread of computers. Skyscraps stand where there used to be traditional houses such as courtyards in Beijing owing to the urbanization. Letters are fading out being substituted by emails and instant messaging as we enter the information age. Obviously, we have been giving up much tradition when keeping in step with rapidly changing modern life.
Yet, some tradition are still preserved in the process of modernization. To some extent, it is modernization that does a favor to the conservation of tradition. To bolster my viewpoint, we can go to a museum. When we appreciate beautiful and mysterious antiques behind windows, we have to thank modern science and techonology for their help to explore and re-appear these precious treasures in history, which represent a piece of wonderful culture. Without advanced probes, it might have continued to be buried in the dark Beyond doubts, it's the modernization that provides us the opportunities to read real history. Another example is the preservation of old buildings. Modern crafts are applied into strenthening old buildings by techonologists to enable the buildings to experience more history. Therefore, modernization is not always the enemy to tradition but even becomes a friend.
Actually, modernization originates from tradition. In other words, if we are able to look further , it is only because we stand on the shoulder of the ancestors. Despite various forms of arts, artists try to express the same feeling with the original, say the persuing love, beauty and truth in masterpieces. The innovations come from the same nature of human beings like what was embodied in cave pictures, literatures written in ancient words and so on. Let's come back to the instance about unmechanized workplace referred to above. In fact, not all fatories were pulled down. Some survived, such as Merk Medicine Cooperation. Facing modernization, the owners of some old-brand business changed their old patterns of medicine production and management. Scientific control of craft process, temperature and evironment during the production and administration learned from modern advancement contributes to develop a more efficient international company. From these, we find modernization inherites treasures from tradition and improve it in return.
To sum up, never can we judge tradition or modernization isolately.
It's unfair for us to choose one from them since they are not incompatible but linked internally. Modernization is merely the result of growth of tradition. They are mutually promotive to each other. |
