TOPIC: ARGUMENT53 - Thirteen years ago, researchers studied a group of 25 infants who showed signs of mild distress when exposed to unfamiliar stimuli such as an unusual odor or a tape recording of an unknown voice. They discovered that these infants were more likely than other infants to have been conceived in early autumn, a time when their mothers' production of melatonin-a hormone known to affect some brain functions-would naturally increase in response to decreased daylight. In a follow-up study conducted earlier this year, more than half of these children-now teenagers-who had shown signs of distress identified themselves as shy. Clearly, increased levels of melatonin before birth cause shyness during infancy and this shyness continues into later life.

According to the article, the author claims that increased levels of melationin before birth results in the infants' shyness on the basis of the first survey and the fact that their mothers produced more melationin in autumn. To support the conclusion that this kind of shyness continues into later life, the author cites another survey. Yet careful scrunity of the argument, I find that the argument relies on unreliable surveys and unsubstantialized assumption which make it unconvincing.

For the first instance, the author falsely equates the correlation between increased amount of melationin and the infants' mild disress, neglecting the fact that maybe 10 infants seem not sufficiently large enough to represent the whole poll of babies. Perhaps, it is their mothers' eating habits change in autumn, and a certain kind of chemical in the food which is the main source of the shyness. It is equally possible that their fathers have shy genes or certain kind of hormone also increases which contributes more in the character of the babies than mothers' melationin.

The author also mistakes mild distress for shyness. Perhaps, the sound of tape was too loud that scared the babies, or the babies who showed signs of distress were more sensitive to the smell, while others even hadn't feel that ordor, so they showed a kind of fear, tense or uncomfort, not  shyness.

Moreover, the author ignores that there are more factors that can influence the children's character, such as the environmental factors. Children who grow up in a big and warm family tend to be more happy and open, while those in cold family with impatient and rude father or mother tend to be more shy. We cannot attribute the teenagers' shyness to the mild distress when they were babies.

Finally, each indivisual has his own different view upon shyness. We should find the same criterior to measure whether one is shy or not, and how shy he is. But in the second survey, the shyness was identified by the subjects themselve, which renders the survey make little sense in drawing a conclusion, let alone to support that the shyness continues into later life.

To sum up, the author should take more things into account. The author should carry out a scientific experiment to make sure that melationin is the only one reason that lead to shyness and rule out any other factors that should infulence the children's character. Only by this way can I agree with the author's conclusion.
