The author claims that, it is a easy task to make ting bigger and more complex, while what require real effort and courage is to make things as simple as possible. I can hardly agree with the author. In my observation, all our efforts and endeavors direct to a final destination, that is satisfy ourselves. As to making things complex or simple, that is depend on how we access that destination.
To begin with, the initial motivation of the human society is people’s desire, and the destination is to be satisfied. That is the real things worth paying effort and courage. In order to satisfy the hunger and thirst, our ancestors go hunting and collecting, then, farming and keeping. To satisfy our wondering, we go inquiring and researching. To satisfy the desire for beauty, we make painting, drawing, and designing. That is how the underlying motivation directs us, and than push the society goes ahead, no matter in science or arts.
Consider the science first. We resort to science usually for two reasons, one is to tackle problems, and the other is to seek answers. Sometimes, we find things are too difficult or too complex, so making things simple are the initial appeal. For instance, feathers and inks were not convenient enough to write, and then the pen was invented. And, it is too tiring to get water form the river, so the pipeline was built. We feel the trip from Paris to London was not quick enough, and then Eurotunnel was constructed. When we pick up the telephone, or turn on the TV, we will find many things are easier and simpler than before thanks to the science. On the other hand, when it cames to seeking questions, we could find that it make simple things sophisticated and elaborated. The astronomy is a sound example. From the Hubble to the Diamond Light Source (DLS), millions of dollars are heaped, and thousands of talents put life efforts into it. Then turn eyes to the life science, like other prevailing theories, the DNA theory was constantly tested against evidence, and refined, and more evidence collected, and the theories tested again. Scientist’s test and argument may persist for decades. All the endeavors in the scientific community just want to answer a simple question asked by Socrates 2400 years ago, that is, “who we are; where were we from; where shall we go”.
Now, consider the arts, which reflect human’s inner emotions and feelings, how to satisfy our desire of seeking beauty. It seems easy for us to pick up evidences to support that arts make things complex. Think about these amazing masterpieces, from Barcelona Cathedral to the fresco in the Sistine Chapel, their sophisticated decoration no doubt impress us. However, other types of arts have the character of simple. Consider the cartoon, the post-modern arts and Chinese ink and wash, which may just use the black color to express the variations of light and shadow. Though these types of arts have the simple form, but they share the same aim with those complex forms to express artist’s emotions and feelings. That is how people make endeavor in the field of arts.
From the discussion above, it is natural to conclude that, to make things complex or simple can not be a destination but a course to access it. It is the desiring to satisfy serves as the initial impetus, which moves people pay efforts and courage, and makes the society go ahead. |
