Issue5: A nation should require all its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college rather than allow schools in different parts of the nation to determine which academic courses to offer.
In some countries, there is a rule that requires all students to study the same national curriculum until they enter colleges. From my perspective, I concur with the assertion that all students should learn a national basic core curriculum, and schools in different part of a nation should have the right to determine which academic courses to offer.
At the beginning, a national basic core curriculum can help students' development no matter in colleges or in society. On one hand, the knowledge taught in a college is much harder than that in a middle school. If students have not learned a basic core curriculum before entering college, then they would be hard to suit the study in colleges. Yet, it is not possible for colleges to set the basic courses again which would waste numerous of teachers, facilities, and finance. On the other hand, as long as a student has learned the basic core courses, even if the student cannot go further with study, he or she can stand in the society. Take mathematics for example. A person who knows only addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division can do the business well, because in daily life, there is no need to know other advanced mathematics, such as algebra, geometry, calculus. Therefore, schools should require students to study some basic core curriculum.
Admittedly, a country should authorize schools in different parts of the country to have the right to set academic courses. Firstly, different colleges focus on different fields. Some pay attention to social science, such as Harvard University, which is famous for its laws and economics, while others keep eyes on nature science, for instance, MIT. Determining which academic courses to offer by schools can strengthen the advantages of schools. Excellent students who want to learn laws and great teachers who want to teach in top schools may come to Harvard University, which would stimulate the university to become better and better. If every school sets the same lessons, then the school will lack of characteristics, and even cannot culture an excellent specialist. Secondly, different places where colleges locate have various situations. Maybe some states invest a lot of money to support the schools' developing. With the financial aids, the colleges can set more classes. While other states take no financial measurement to assist schools, which will lead to less classes. Thirdly, colleges would change classes in different times. A college may increase the number of courses when the economy is in a good condition, while decrease it as economy felling down. For example, some colleges in California have announced to decrease the number of classes. Hence, if the government allows schools to determine which academic courses to offer, then the schools can be much competitive, and adjust many policies immediately.
Based on what have discussed above, I find that a nation should give schools the authorization in different parts to determine which courses to offer, and all students should accept a basic core curriculum before entering colleges.

There is a heat discussion about what kind of curriculum should students have, the national curriculum or the state-determined curriculum. According to my observation, both of these two curricula have advantages. However, when we make a curriculum, we should keep in mind that the requirements of students are the most important elements that can influence the curriculum.
提出观点:全国性的课程和由州决定课程都有优点。然而,影响课程设置的最重要的是学生的要求。(也不知道你这个州决定课程这样提观点算不算跑题,根据题目是说由各州的学校自行设置课程)
In the first place, it is obviously true that the national core curriculum has some benefits to students. On the one hand(应该是on one hand吧,在你两篇文章都发现这个了), with the most basic courses, such as math, physics and so on, being learned, students would be well-informed and well-prepared for the future. On the one hand(on the other hand), by learning the most basic courses, students can form their own value systems. Through the study of the core curriculum provided by the nation, students can learn to respect others, treat people with different attitudes with more tolerance and be polite to each other, upon all of which we depend to survive and to strive for a more democratic society. What's more, after students all around the nation learning the same course(courses), it is much more equal for them to struggle for a college or a university since they are educated at the same level. In addition, based on this core curriculum, colleges and universities can make out more reasonable courses that can fit for students. In a word, a nations(nation) should make a core curriculum for their students because of such significant advantages.
全国性的核心课程对学生有好处。我觉得你这一段应该把on the other hand中的内容提到前面去。因为what’s more又开始讲有助于学生升学,这和on one hand中的内容是比较相近的。否则,太跳跃,层次性不清晰。
In the second place, the advantages of state-determined curriculum should not be ignored. On one side, it is important for different states to make some courses for their students for the reason that students can learn the history, culture, custom and tradition of their own state(states,复数要前后一致). As a result, it is good to keep the diversity of the national cultures. Such as in China, students of different provinces are asked to learn geography, history and some other courses of their own province(provinces) in order to make a(既然是很多学生,那么这个a应去掉) comprehensive understanding of their own provinces' culture. On the other side, state-determined curriculum is much more flexible than the national curriculum. Since the number of students in one state is significantly smaller than the number of the nation, making a course according to the needs of students is easier for a state while doing such a thing is so difficult that it might cost several years or even longer. In short, for the development of students and the national culture diversities, state-made curriculum is indispensable.
不应忽视由州自行设置课程的优点。
However, though the importance of these two kind(kinds) of curricula is easy to be seen, we should keep in our mind that all curricula are determined by the needs of students rather than the subjective minds of the government. Only with the requirements of students being contented can they grow up healthily and make a wonderful future for our society since they are the dominate parts of our society before long. If the course is determined by the government without considering students' needs, it is hard to say that our students can benefits from this curriculum. Even they can learn some knowledge, it is just suitable to the needs of nowadays not of the future. So for the good development of our future, students' needs must be considered all the time.
课程设置应该满足学生的需求。
To sum up, no matter the national core curriculum or the state-determined curriculum has benefits to students and our nation. However, all these curriculum must rely on the needs of students. Otherwise, our educational quality would be undermined.
小结:对你的论点有些疑问,不知道是否算跑题。除了第二段建议调整一下外,整体层次还是比较清楚。 |
