Should all faculties in colleges and universities spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the course they teach? The speaker claims so for the reason that it could improve the quality of instruction. In my point of view, I concede that sometimes there are some disadvantages about working outside the academic world. Otherwise, it is good for both the faculties and the students for most of the time.

Admittedly, working outside the academic world may have some shortcomings, such as the quality’s decrease of teaching and research that need a lot of time. As teachers working for enterprises and of course earning money, they may have less time caring about their students and preparing for their classes, thus, the teaching quality could not be ensured. When it comes to some fields of purely academics, there requires even less practice. For instance, chen jingrun is a famous mathematician of China, even though he is a poor talker and almost goes nowhere in his lifelong time except his office, no one could deny his great achievement of solving the Goldbach conjecture that confused the mathematic area for more than hundreds of years and get a breakthrough of that branch of math. He once said that without calculating all day, he could not achieve so much at all. Therefore, I concede that in some area, sometimes faculties don't need to or had better not to work outside the academic world.

However, for most of the time it is certain that working outside the academic area may benefit a lot, especially for those majors that need a lot of practice. In these areas, there is a lot of knowledge that is relevant to the world outside classes, only through practicing could an academic area improve their ways of teaching and bring students more about the practicing skills that they may use at work or even give them career advices after graduate. The father of hybrid rice, Yuan Long ping, worked his great achievement out in the wild area, and his inspiration is also from the wild rice. Thus, it is easy to understand his motto that there is no good scientist in his field that works only in laboratory.

In addition, there is one more important reason sustains that the faculties' working outside is beneficial/helpful. As the society changes rapidly, the knowledge is updating all the time, without connecting to the outside academic world, one's knowledge may out of date soon, therefore making their teaching at low quality level, their researches may turns out to be useless. As a typical example shows that students who majored in computer often complain that what their teachers' saying are useless. We could find the answer from a research indicated that what junior computer majored students have learnt would be out of date when they are seniors. That is why there are many universities hire managers of enterprises to be as teachers.

In sum, even though I concede that there are some fields such as math are not that suitable to have their faculties worked out, for most academic area, working outside the academic world may benefits a lot.
