153. Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively.

“Skepticism is a resting place for human reasoning where it can reflect on dogmatic wanderings and gain some knowledge of the region but it cannot be permanent dwelling place,” said Immanuel Kant, the 18th century German philosopher. It is clear that skepticism has its advantages, but we cannot stay there forever. Holding a contrast opinion with the speaker, who asserts that people should always have a spirit of skepticism, I believe that skepticism must rely on the basic knowledge, and then we can be creative.

People cannot always being skeptical to everything when they are lack of knowledge. Knowledge is the basis, and it gives the first understanding of the world for us. We get knowledge from teachers, who taught the basic background of every realm, no matter math, geography, or history, which help us to understand a large number of reasons why there are four seasons in a year, why the color of leaves is green, and why we will feel cold in winter and feel hot in summer. Without the knowledge, we are not able to keep an attitude of skepticism on whether it is true or not. The only thing we can do is to accept what we are taught by teachers, and what are written in the books. Then we will have a fundamental idea about the society, the earth and the galaxy. It is these ideas that help us to go on walking in one area and then finally make a difference.

After owning a certain foundation of knowledge, we begin to be eager to discover the principles of everything and then being skeptical helps us to succeed in one area. We will ask more questions about why one plus one equals two, what is the mechanism of those phenomena in the world, why the sea level is increasing and why the weather is getting worse as well. The spirit of skepticism is the motivation that helps people to be creative. It is this kind of spirit that makes Edward Jenner discovery vaccination and makes Nicolaus Copernicus formulate a comprehensive heliocentric cosmology. During the process, we may find that past theory is flawed by some small errors, and we can go on research and finally correct it. By questioning constantly, we will find more truths about the world, which help us to build a scientific system that help people to be fully aware of the world.

We should make full use of those truths proved by past people, and then being skeptical appropriately to the contemporary world. We should not doubt everything we are taught even though we have a certain level of education. When we study an axiom, we should care more about how did it being deduced first, rather than simply recite the conclusion, so that we can better understand it but also make use of it in the later study. In the mean time, we make sure that the axiom is convincing and also cultivate us a good habit when doing research. Skepticism just throwing up your hands and you will be free to think whatever you want.

In sum, people should have a certain foundation of knowledge then they can be skeptical to whatever they are taught in the class or in the books. By skepticism constantly, human beings will discover more interesting principles in the world and then they can achieve more.
