The most important feature of the 20 century is the developement of the science and the technology, which influence almost every corner of this society, not only in the material concern but also the spiritual concern. As a result it is reasonable to say it influences the social customs and ethics. But in my view it is not proper to assert it determines the social customs and ethics.
In the first aspect, no one can deny that the technology has indeed influenced the social customs and ethics. Numerous of cases of this kind come into my mind at this time. The emerge of the E-mail is a vivid case. After the E-mail available to the average people, it rapidly toke place of the trditional letters and acts as a mean of the message transformation among people. At present, people say write to some one means to send him or her an E-mail. The industrialization is also a case in point. Before this action, people of most Europ hold the idea that the women are not allowed to work out. When the initiation of this action, as the labor force required by the society has increased and the practical need for the women to earn btead for their family, they begin to come out of home to get jobs as men. In newerdays, the women act almost the same role in the society. In other words, the society has aktered the ethics and accepted that the women can get jobs in any field.
Another concern is that the technology can not determine the social customs and ethics. To be honest, it is the tradition which determined it. Coonsider the letter case mentioned above, although at present people tend to use the E-mail as the way of communication, the paper is always the best way to express the profound emotion of them, especially for lovers. The chrasmas in the westen world and the spring festival in China are all trditional festivals, in which the ceremony has never been changed. We have to notice that the technology also
influenced them by alter the entertainment ways and tools for people during this period. Or in other word, the technology just altered the superficial itemd of the traditional festivals but can not determined them in any aspects. The banal of the human cloning also can be explained by this issue: the human moral can not be challenged by the development of the technology!
For all the aspectes mentioned above, we can safely get the conclusion that the technology, as a result of the development of the science, has impacted our society in almost any aspects, not only in the material level but also the spiritual level. Nevertheless, the mere function of the technology to the social customs and ethics is just alter them, far away from determining them which is the function the tradition.
