It seems elusive to claim that people do not change, as the statement implies. They differ even according to geographical variance, let alone times. Nevertheless, when examining the innate characters of man, the humanity, I side with the author and hold the belief that (前后的论述都很不错,然而此处的转折有些断裂感,加上they do not change and是否更合适)history indeed benefits us in the revelation of (revealing是否更简洁) inner similarity (similarities) of man.
True, the world evolves and mutates through times. The change in lifestyle, for example, is among the most drastical: think about the dramatical development in transportation, communication, entertainment and housing habits(?不理解,是否换个表达), etc., and no one can deny the distinctions between times. Regime, as well, alters from the primitive tribe to feudal system, and all the way up to capitalism that dominates most of today’s countries. Even in ideology, the obsolete doctrine on caste system fades away, replacing by more enlightened and tolerant thoughts promoting the equity and justice. History tells all those. (根据首段,该段应该论述人随着历史是在变化的,例如人的一些外貌特征、基本习惯。然而主题句定位为“世界随着时间进展而变化”,是否有些不妥。段落的主题句和内容是否更应该向人方面靠拢,而非首句中的世界)
Yet, granted the change in forms of living and society,(还是同一个问题,后面说明人的本质不变,此处是否应该说人的一些表象特征没变?) we learn form history that humanity—the essence of man—remains largely unchanged. We learn, that the suffering of people living in the base of social pyrimid (pyramid) remains to be equally painful.(这点不能算人的本质吧) We learn, that the hope for love spreads across the limit of time and tragedy of Romeo and Juliet might not to cease. We learn, that justice is not automatically granted and people’s pursuit for happiness never end(前面的主语为单数,是否该用ends). (这里的排比句很不错,赞个。但首段提到的人的本质几乎还没有看到,似乎一直在说社会和世界。)Those similarities elicit the innermost empathy when a person touches history and is touched by the perpetual humanity embraced within.
This comfort (comforts) us much. The recognition and knowledge of similarities in humanity, acquired through the study of history, serves as tranquilizer of individuals, relieving the solitude and anxiety induced by the swift-altered society and creating a sense of belonging. Viewing humanity as a continuous and congruous tie, a person realizes that what he is experiencing has been experienced before and what he is dreaming for has been dreamt and pursued earlier. A deeply rooted empathy, a strong affection for man, emerges to alleviate the unrest of solitary human existence within the enormous universe. (个人价值)
In fact, most, if not all, aspects of human society have been constructed upon the history-taught knowlegde (knowledge) that human do not change much during times. The sphere of art, for example, spins around the timeless emotion of man. Without the recognition of such similarities, artists will find their works totally in vain: one that harbors no same feeling with them might not be able to perceive their meaning. Government that is searching for direction learns that totalitarian never wins and the universal appeal is rightness. For religion, its all magic authority depends upon the knowledge that man, whatever times and places, seeks for the same and can be comforted by the same. After two thousand years, Confucianism still exerts its influence and serves as spiritual end-result for modern people. Without perception for the similar humanity unveiled by history, the development of society would be depressing staccato. (社会价值)(个人很欣赏这种层面展开和升华,然而文章花一段让步,两段升华,是否有些喧宾夺主。此处值得商榷,这点我也一直在困惑中。但毕竟有效论证自己的观点是文章的首要任务。)
Leszek Kolakowski said, “We learn history not in order to know how to behave or how to succeed, but to know who we are.” By breaking down the illusion that people of different times pole apart, history presents people the perpetual humanity and, in so doing, constructs the foundation for human civilization.
作者语言不错。首段即将文章定位在“人性”高度,的确很引人入胜。然而“人性”类的文章一般也较难阐释,这或许可以解释一些文中论证的缺陷。个人意见未必都对,仅供参考:) |
