TOPIC: ISSUE131 - "The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society."
WORDS: 513 TIME: 01:21:27 DATE: 2010-2-12 12:58:48
I fundamentally agree with the author's assertion that several different kinds of arts, including painting, music, literature, etc., could reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society. However, the author unnecessarily embrace the broad assertion the condition that arts are in the form of pure mind which is isolated with the society. My points of contention includes both arts that are related to and isolated from the society, as dicussed below.
Admittedly, a huge amount of arts are related to the society, even though reflect the hidden facets of society, that without the inspiration or instruction through the form of arts, merely could normal people realize that.
Let's take a glance at the paintings, which is the most important form of arts throughout the human history. The distinguished painting named " potato eaters ", painted by the Netherlands great painter Van Gogh, implies a strong desire of him to express the poverty and misery as he saw miners in Belgium. With his painting strokes, the social status of lowest lever workers were brought into the eyeview of normal people.
As in the field of literature, the predominant American writer Mark Twain, who is reputated as the "greatest American humorist at his age", is praised from both peers and critics because his great ability to capture the realistic meaning of that era. Lu Xun is known as one of the greatest writers in modern times of China, since his incredible attributions to intrigger the realization about the social status and drawbacks in that period, furthermore, his works evoke the people's enthusiasm to wake up and against the evil.
If we take a look at the archietectural design, the world famous housing company IKEA, which is nominated by its simplicity of design, honestly indicates the inclination of Swedish society, that is the favorable desire to get close to or back to the nature, give people the simpliest and the most original experiences.
However, other forms of arts have few connection with the contemporary society, while they are only the reflection of the inner mind of their artists. Since a number of artists are insulated from the society, and they may choose the distant mountainous area to pursue the inner peace of mind, their thoughts have nothing to do with the contemporary society and their inspiration is attained through the communication with nature. For example, a bunch of masterpieces of ancient Chinese paintings are just the landscape painting to reflect the individual admiration of magnificent nature. Another example is Beethoven's masterpiece in music, his world-famous music - To Alice. Despite the tremendous artistic value in the music itself, it's a melody played to his lover to represent his affection, rather than the reflection of the society.
To summarize the issue, though the author's assertion may have merit, in my opinion, it unfairly generalizes about arts. When we are showing our aprreciation to the arts, we should notice the hidden ideas and impulses of a society, otherwise, at the same time, we must not lose our sight of creativity and personal charm of the artists. |
