TOPIC: ISSUE196 - "Technology creates more problems than it solves, and may threaten or damage the quality of life."

I can not agree with the author. In my opinion, the initial impetus of the technology is to tackle problems. It is certainly may cause other new problems when they solve one, but that should not blame the technology. As to cause threaten or damage the quality of life, it depends on how the technology was used.

To begin with, the object of the technology is to tackle the problems. Mostly, great technology may push the society ahead. Consider the iron, which replaced the copper as the most advanced material in the cold-weapon age, helped the Hittite’s army became the most powerful one in the Asia minor in 150 B.C. And the electricity illuminated the night of the American in the late 18th centaury. The subways were constructed in the aim of resolving the transportation congeal in the rush hours. Even problems happen in the field of polity, technology may contribute to settle it. Consider the Gallup Poll system which tracks the citizens’ opinion about many aspects of life, could afford much information in the presidential campaign or the practice of a policy. Another extreme example is the nuclear weapon.

The problems that technology brings may be divided into two categories. In one hand, the settled one may just a part of a serial of problems. In this case, to reach the final object, the settled one may serve as the premise of the latter ones or the later ones may be unpredicted. Consider the stem cell research first. This area is seen as a forbidden field because of the ethnics reasons or some political causes. This technology triggering universal debate, among which the hottest one is the egregious and unacceptable way of obtaining the human stem cell from the embryo, which cast dim on the stem cell research. Fortunately, at the end of 2009, a new technology on how to abstract the stem cell form adult somatic cell has been published. This technology, or say it is a kind of circumvent, bring the stem cell research a brighter future. With the development of the science and technology, the unknown world are open to us, but the universal is infinity, so we may find there are more problems we should resolve. However, those problems are not created by the technology, but by which we find it is there.

In the other hand, on the contrary, when the technology direct in the wrong direction, it may cause the negative influence, or even treated or damage the quality of life. But what we should be aware is that, it is not the mistake of the technology itself, but the way people use it. A sound example is the atomic energy. It produces tremendous cleaner electricity, and destroyed millions of lives. That is not the fault of the technology, but the war. Another example is the internet. It is certainly the inevitable method that transmits the information, and at the same times, millions of networms indulge in the virtual world at the expense of time and health. If the use of technology could be regulate, the minimal negative effect could be controlled.

In short, the technology itself is neutral, some of its aftermath dues to the technology itself, others are cause the by the people used it. In either of the case, the problem is not created by the technology. Whether it threaten or benefit the quality of life, that is depends on the right or wrong way it directed by people.
