Is a global university, considered as an academic place to discuss the world’s most persistent social problems, really necessary in all nations? And, is it actually useful to solve the problems? These are two questions which I start to think about after a thoroughly thinking this author’s argumentation. The author believes it should, but I think the otherwise,
To begin with, I concede that the world’s most persistent social problems should be discussed in the university. Although the current situations in different countries vary, there are also myriads common problems, which are so complicated that calls for a cooperation at the universal level, such as the poverty problems, terrorist crisis, global warming, global financial crisis and so forth. And people from all over the world with a various of culture backgrounds always have a different opinion on the same issue. Students will benefit from the exchange of ideas in many ways, such as learning how to argue with a person who holds contradictory views and how to accept the diversity of the world.
Besides the benefits of students can get from a discussion in a global university I cited above, do we think that students who never live in the society on their own and get their information and opinions from books or teachers, who are confusing and curious about the real world can really create a feasible and useful method that even the most prestigious experts still do not know and are also looking for now? I believe the answer is no. Even probably, they may create a series of undesirable new problems. I will explain it as follows.
First, I have to point out that establishing a global university will cost a lot of money. Some nations which are under the poverty line or still have trouble in providing enough food for its people will unwilling or unfeasible to establish one. And it will lead to an undesirable result that solely wealthy countries can build a global university which only contains students from prosperous nations or from wealthy families. The opinion on the issues like poverty may not be fully representative of all nations. And even they try to consider the points of view from unwealthy countries, their points are also highly doubtable since most of them may have never been lack of money in their whole lives. Common sense tells me that if you have never actually been through a situation, you should not make comments on it. So the results or solutions that deduce from the discussion may be unfeasible and ridiculous.
Second, due to the immaturity as I mentioned above, innocent college students may be led by terrorists or some evil groups in the world. For example, in my country some naive students thought that the minority is not treated fairly, and they believe that they have the obligations to speak it out. However, some evil minority groups deliberately agitated this emotion and make the claims into a fighting against the government. If it happened in a global college, a racial fight will be inevitable, which is entirely unnecessary.
In sum, without considering thoroughly the every single advantage and disadvantage, that all nations should support a global college is unnecessary and even harmful and the feasibility of the solution is also open to doubt. The idea of establishing a global university is still too naive.
