Art is a realm where our spiritual fortunes settle. The various categories of art provide us the enjoyment which is relative to the life, society and even the whole world. However, as the artistic performances are the avatar of the artists' emotion, sometimes they are so abstruse that the masses have to rely on the critics so that the public can learn the essential significance of the artistic achievements. Thus, some of us may hold the question that who actually give the society something of lasting value? From my point of view, both of them assist us to enjoy the art as well as consider ourselves and society.

On one hand, there are a myriad of artistic performances which can arose the common recognition of the masses all by the artist. By this way, the critic seems unnecessary. For instance, Beethoven's NO.5 symphony "destiny ", which manifested the endurance to the frustration and disappointment of the destiny and struggling for the hope and dream of our lives, convulsing the world all by its amazing feeling the artist has instilled in. Nearly all of the public can recognize the essential meaning as soon as we listen to it. To sum up, the value of the art can be expressed all by the artists themselves when the methods of revealing the soul of their performances are easily understood.

On the other hand, when some artists choose to express their thoughts and emotion through an abstractly way, it is not only necessary, but also desirable for the critics interpret the essence to the public so that the majority can value then as the priceless fortune and then attain the lasting value. An aptly example is Picasso's painting, "Dove", few of us will truly understand the painter's intend is to express his desire to the peace of the world without the assistance of the critics for his way to manifest feelings is too abstruse to the masses, needless to mention choose the "Dove" as the sample on the flag of the United States. Furthermore, the Van Gough's famous painting, "Eating potatoes", thanks to the critics' profound understanding that what the author wants to exhibit is the life of the miners, or we are entirely possible treat it just as a common painting which describe a simple moment. Consequently, thanks to the existence of the critics who can give the artistic works perpetual energy as well as the lasting value.

Nevertheless, since people have different experiences and hold various perspectives, it is probable that the critics' understanding will be against by some persons who do not agree with them. Just like Shakespeare's saying "There are one thousand Hamlets in one thousand readers' eyes." Because of the distinction of us, even the actually same thing may arose different movement. Thus, the meaning of the artistic performances may change along with the time, the current condition and the alternation of the observers. We cannot hasty conclude the value of anything. For example, Escher's paintings, which were treated as the creations of graphic art, also inspire the mathematician from another perspective.
All to all, sometimes whether the value of the art is lasting also depend on the objective factors which neither the critics nor the artists themselves can control.

In conclusion, both the artists and the critics play vital roles in the domain of art, without the artists, we have nothing to assess or even enjoy, without the critics, we may feel puzzled instead of pleasure when we face up to an artistic works, needless to say the lasting value. Besides, the differences among different people may also result in different views and values.
