TOPIC: ARGUMENT235 - The following appeared in a memorandum from the general manager of KNOW radio station.

"Several factors indicate that radio station KNOW should shift its programming from rock-and-roll music to a continuous news format. Consider, for example, the number of older people in our listening area has increased dramatically, while the total number of our listeners has recently declined. Also, music stores in our area report decreased sales of recorded music. Finally, continuous news stations in neighboring cities have been very successful, and a survey taken just before the recent election shows that local citizens are interested in becoming better informed about politics."

In this memo, the manager of KNOW radio station suggests that the station should play consecutive news programs instead of rock-and –roll music. The reasons are the increasing of senior citizens in their listening area, the decreasing of their total listeners and musical record sale. The success of continuous news station in neighboring city is also cited. Citizens take more interest in political news before the latest election. However, the argument cannot convince me with the following reasons.
Firstly, the two examples of senior citizens and total listeners have no persuasions. The manager presumes that few of the old people listen to rock-and-roll music, but most of them enjoy news radio programs. He also presumes that the listeners who abandon listening radios are all their listeners. Then a conclusion comes to him that their rock-and-roll music programs are not welcomed any more. Actually, not all of the old people choose radio programs as pastime. Their choices include television, DVD player, movie, and others. And some senior listeners may like rock-and -roll music better than news. Besides, we are not informed the statistics of other radio stations’ listeners in the area. Perhaps other stations lose more listeners than KNOW, rock-and-roll music is still welcomed, compares to news. After all, something like television and mp4 also attract people’ attention.
Secondly, the decreased sales of music records do not mean that rock-and-roll music is not welcomed. The music lovers may download music from net, watch TV and listen to radio program to save money.
Thirdly, copy other city’s radio station may not lead to success. Different cities have different proportions in citizens’ composing. For example, political news program may be more welcomed in Washington DC than in Hollywood. And perhaps the continuous news station is successful just by reason of the latest election. Citizens have to pay attention to continuous news because they are eager to know result. After the election, they may resume their love to other kind of radio programs, included rock-and-roll music.
In sum, the memo cannot persuade me to shift KNOW to continuous news format unless the manager provides detailed information and evidences which are more convincible.
