48 "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but bygroups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
What is significant events and trends in history made by? It is made by groups of people, whose identities have long been forgotten, or those famous few individuals? The speaker tends to attribute it to the former, but I agree thatthe individuals are real crucial factor of the process of history.
Admittedly,at times particular groups of people have played a more pivotal role than key individuals in important historical development. In these situations, only certain groups of people, rather than few, have enough power to push the history forward. For instance, in late 1970s' punk movement, some well-known punk-rock bands such as Sex Pistols, The Ramones, were the most impressive memory to us. But when closely studying the emergence of this subculture and the later movement, we often owes them to a group of young people who share similar aesthetics, taste of music, type of ideologies, and call themselves"punk". What we learn from this example is that those famous people can sometimes be the protagonist of a period of time, but they did not make the history.
However, in most cases, the certain key characters are the driving force behind historical events. A persuading example is The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution inChina between 1966 and 1976. This widespread social and political upheaval in China, which was launched by Mao Zedong, the former chairman of China, had led to nation-wide chaos and economy disarray. Although a variety of groups of people like students, urban workers were engaged in the movement in different ways, they did not get out of the frame build by Mao. What they do and what they say, and even the way they behave themselves were deeply influenced byMao's renowned book: "Quotations from Chairman Mao". Therefore key individuals can be the main impetus of history, they influenced large amount of people and they are the fundamental reason of the development of the history.
Furthermore, among the innumerable people, only some of them can give clues about the entire history of a certain period, as well as helping us know the history explicitly. To illustrate this point, let us see the process of World War II. Considering the fact that almost every nation was involved in this global military conflict, it is difficult to describe the massive war by counting everyone in. On the contrary, choosing those individuals who played as decisive roles during the wartime is a betterway. By studying the story of individuals such as Hitler, Mussolini, Churchill, we are able to get access to the complex history of the war more easily. Analyzing their thoughts is also important for us to understand the war.So in history research, famous individuals are often more valuable than those countless groups of people.
To sum up,it is those key individuals, but not nameless and faceless groups of people, shaped the history. Their experiences are the vital experience of history. In this way, we can never emphasize the importance of studying them too much.
