TOPIC: ARGUMENT173
The following is a memorandum issued by the publisher of a newsmagazine, Newsbeat, in the country of Dinn.

"Our poorest-selling magazine issues over the past three years were those that featured international news stories on their front covers. Over the same period, competing news-magazines have significantly decreased the number of cover stories that they devote to international news. Moreover, the cost of maintaining our foreign bureaus to report on international news is increasing. Therefore, we should decrease our emphasis on international news and refrain from displaying such stories on our magazine covers."

In this passage, the author argues that the newsmagazine emphasizes less on international news and constrains such stories on the magazine covers. And he has three reasons to support his conclusion: the first one is the poorest-selling of those magazine issues featured international news stories on front covers; the second one is the competitors have significantly decline the number of cover stories that they devote to international news; the last one is the increasing cost of foreign bureaus. With improper analogy and fallacious evidence, the author's assertion is not convincing.

Firstly, author does not provide us the accurate sales data of the past three years. He only said "the poorest-selling magazine issues were those featured international news stories on their front covers". There are many elements which could influence the sale records of magazine, such as contents, prices, advertisements and so on. And the front covers are not decisive elements for the selling of magazine. Even if the front covers could decide the selling of magazine, there are also no other evidence to imply the international news on front covers decrease the selling. After all, author also does not tell us if all the issues featured international news on front covers are sold badly. Perhaps, those which are not sold well are international news on front covers.

Furthermore, competitors decrease the number of cover stories related with international news do not mean author's magazine need do the same actions. Perhaps, the author's magazine is professional in international news, and they do some actions because they cannot win the author's magazine in international news this area. Thus, they give up competing with his magazine and emphasize their strengthened areas. Even if the author's magazine is not good at the international news, there will be opportunity because of other magazines quit the international news as cover stories. Thus, this reason do not strengthen author's conclusion.

At last, the author mentions the increasing cost of foreign bureaus. Without the number of how many profits of foreign bureaus have made, author is too hasty to think international news should be eliminated. Moreover, perhaps, even if the foreign bureaus cost much in today, they will be helpful in future. Or, the magazine could save some money by taking other methods instead of his conclusion.

In sum, author's evidence is too weak to persuade people. His reasons are not sufficient to prove that they should refrain from displaying such stories on covers. Moreover, his reasons are also not illustrate they should decrease their emphasis on international news. To make his conclusion is convincing, author should provide us more detailed information and evidence.

And the front covers are not decisive elements for the selling of magazine.(前两句其实可以合并,置顶到TS。Besides the first impression of cover, many other elements together contribute to the sale records, such as ****. Even if the front covers could decide the selling of magazine, there are also no other evidence to imply the international news on front covers decrease the selling. After all, author also does not tell us if all the issues featured international news on front covers are sold badly. 而且,作者已经说了是Poorest-selling,就是存在那么最差的几期,不太好强词夺理说未必不好卖呢?)Perhaps, those which are not sold well are international news on front covers.(没看明白。

Furthermore, competitors decrease the number of cover stories related with international news do not mean author's magazine need do the same actions.(两个动词, 有点RUN-ON,或者在Competitors前加“The phenomenon that /the action of.” Perhaps, the author's magazine is professional in international news, and they do some actions because they cannot win the author's magazine in international news this area. (再次暴露审题中的错误,“Our poorest-selling magazine issues over the past three years were those that featured international news stories on their front covers.” Thus, they give up competing with his magazine and emphasize their strengthened areas. Even if the author's magazine is not good at the international news, there will be opportunity because of other magazines quit(because of后面接名词,这里用Because吧?) the international news as cover stories. Thus, this reason do not strengthen author's conclusion.
原因有:1、竞争对手转型未必是因为Poor sales,2、竞争对手情况是否好转没有提及;

At last, the author mentions the increasing cost of foreign bureaus. Without the number of how many profits of foreign bureaus have made, author is too hasty to think international news should be eliminated. (指出了作者的假设)Moreover, perhaps, even if the foreign bureaus cost much in today, they will be helpful in future.

In sum, author's evidence is too weak to persuade people. His reasons are not sufficient to prove that they should refrain from displaying such stories on covers. Moreover, his reasons are also not illustrate they should decrease their emphasis on international news. To make his conclusion is convincing, author should provide us more detailed information and evidence.(最后一段的模板化比较严重。。。)
