TOPIC: ARGUMENT163 - The following is taken from the editorial section of the local newspaper in Rockingham.
"In order to save a considerable amount of money, Rockingham's century-old town hall should be torn down and replaced by the larger and more energy-efficient building that some citizens have proposed. The old town hall is too small to comfortably accommodate the number of people who are employed by the town. In addition, it is very costly to heat the old hall in winter and cool it in summer. The new, larger building would be more energy efficient, costing less per square foot to heat and cool than the old hall. Furthermore, it would be possible to rent out some of the space in the new building, thereby generating income for the town of Rockingham."
According to this editorial, in order to saving the amount of money, the author recommends to replace the old city hall with a new one. To support his advice, the author offers some evidences as follow:1)the old hall is too small to comfortably contain all the employees, on the contrary,
the new one will have plenty of room. 2) it is expensive to keep the hall warm in winter and cool in summer, but the new one costs less per square foot.3) renting the spare space of the new hall can make some profits. After putting serious analysis through this editorial, it is not difficult for us to find some logical mistakes.
Firstly, the lack of the room cannot be the powerful reason of constructing a new city hall. According to the context, the author just tells us that the amount of the space is not able to hold all the employees, comfortably. The word “comfortably” means the space is adequate but not plenty.这个理由蛮好的。 Therefore, there is no necessary to replace the old city hall with a new building. Moreover, since the target of the advice is saving money, even assuming the room of the old hall is enough needy to amplify, the cost of the new construction plan must be taken into account. However, the author does not offer any information about the expense of the new town hall. So the possibility of achieving the goal that saving money still remains to be seen.这个可以学习~
Secondly, the more energy-efficiency does not mean less expense of money. As the context shows, the author provides the information that the new building costs less per square foot. Since the new building is absolutely larger than the old one, the total cost to controlling the temperature indoor may not less than that of the old town hall. Ironically, the author neither provides any information to show the economy directly in the part of controlling temperature, nor offers any data to help readers infer the conclusion that the new building will be more economical. As a result, the feasibility of the suggestion needs to be suspected.我喜欢你的结尾~
Thirdly, there are no evidences to support the assumption that renting the spare places of the new building can save money. On the one hand, the author does not give any witness to show the demand of the renting. That is to say, the possibility of renting the spare room of the new hall is not for sure. On the other hand, since the author does not say anything about the amount of the area the new hall will provide, we cannot predict whether there is any spare room in the new city hall. In a word, the renting out some space to save money is just a hypothesis which based on a foundation that is tumbledown.
On the basic of the above, to follow the suggestion provided in this editorial may not be a wise measure. The author should offer plenty of information about the total expense of constructing the new building and margin of the cost to controlling temperature. Besides, the author should make an investigation about the amount of the spare space in the new hall and the economic environment of renting room. Unless all the measures mentioned above are accomplished, the feasibility of the advice can be taken into account.
Julymay的文章读着很通顺~我喜欢你的结尾,都值得我学习。好像找不出什么漏洞呢~
顺便说一句,这是A163,不是A17.。。 |
