In contemporary society, technology becomes an irreplaceable part of our life, and to a large extend, it also changes life style of people and development of society. We share a belief that technologies influence social customs and ethics; however, it is presumptuous to judge social customs and ethics only according to the technologies. In my observation, when it comes to social customs and ethics, there are several factors should be taken into account, as discussed blow.

Admittedly, technologies influence social customs and ethnics to certain extend. Consider the technological development in most recent quarter-century, especially the development of internet. 30 years ago, people communicated others by letter or telephone and published their viewpoints by newspaper and book. But now, with the various application of internet, every individual can communicate others by email or instant messenger, share their thinking by Blog or Twitter, and show themselves in the Face book. This changing has a far-reaching impact on people’s life style, and then influences the social customs, mainly reflected in two aspects. Firstly, it makes our world seems to be smaller than ever before, and directly lead to the fusion of different culture and different customs. For example, we can see an increasing tendency that the Christmas Day is accepted by the eastern society. Secondly, the changing lets our having a speedy and restless living tempo. As everybody is pressed for time, we rarely get to meet our friends and neighbors. In short, development of technology, whether positive or negative, has great influence on social customs and ethics.

Moreover, social customs and ethics is a combined result of several reasons. I concede that unless technology provide necessary support, that the social customs and ethics would be totally different. But the only time we can analyze the transition of social customs and ethics is when all factors are well prepared for ourselves which including culture background, significant events and so on. As the example of internet above, the changing is not merely hinge on the development of technologies. The idea that “world is smaller than ever before” is primary from the tendency of globalization among us as early as decades ago, the technology has served as a catalyst in that period. In addition, without the strong development of technology, human being also will achieve the globalization sooner or later.

As a complement to the speaker’s claim, turn our attention to the influence of technologies; we should avoid the abysmal effect to our society from it. While today’s technologies let our life convenient and effective, it is also lead to some of the people become an unsocial and cranky one and social customs and ethics turn into unexpected. Whatever else may be said, most people would agree that let the technology under our thumb is necessary to society, as well as avoid the negative influence.

In sum, although technologies play a significant role in our society, it cannot determine social customs and ethics. In addition, the influence of technologies to our society should let us think awfully, and avoids the terrible result. In the final analysis, I think the speaker’s claim is an over-statement at best while appealing in some aspects.
