Issue 8 It is often necessary, even desirable, for political leaders to withhold information from the public.
The speaker asserts that it is often necessary, even desirable, for political leaders to withhold information from the public. In my prospective, it should depend on the nature of these concealing. If the government do all these in order to keep a harmonious society, it is necessary. But on the other hand, if the politic leader does these to make his own profits it will be an evil deed.
The first evidence that can be used to support my point is that it is the government’s responsibility to keep the public well informed. Admittedly, the government has to tell some white lie in some certain situations. For example, in a natural disaster, the government always says that everything is under control and all the rescues are on the way. Maybe the situation is getting worse or the rescue is not sufficed for all the needs. The government is the only hope in the refugee’s eyes, it give them faith to survive. In some other cases, if the scientists forecast that our earth will be ruined in one day, it is not necessary for government to inform the public, because this is inescapable and will cause some unnecessary panic. But in the most time, the politic leaders do not try to withhold the information on the benefit of the public. For instance, they do not give public a proper explanation of how the taxation is spent or how much it has spent on a public project. The government should be established of the people, for the people, by the people. The taxpayer has the rights to know how did his money been spent. The government should be open in the financial aspect in order to avoid corruption.
Beside, it is unfair to say that every concealing is desirable. Sometimes the public leader withholds some information because they lack of power to solve it, such as these natural disasters. However, the political leader should not use his power to withhold some information in order to fool the public. For example, the former American president Nixon is trying to withhold the Watergate scandal in order to protect his public image. Sometimes this concealing can be even cruel such as Hitler manipulates the Germany people to beget a bloody war in order to satisfy his own dominate the European.
In sum, the society needs the politic leaders to withhold some harmless information. In any society, a leader who relies chiefly on deception and secrecy to preserve that leadership, or to advance a private agenda to betray the public will certainly be overturned by them. |
