General speaking, a society consists of all people living in it and various relationships among people and groups. To deal with various relations, a society builds legal and moral codes which are embodied as the ideas and values. Hence, I agree that by observing the appearance and behavior of the people, one can tell about their attitude and interests and meanwhile, tell much about the ideas and values of society, since there is a mutually causal link between ideas and values of society and
people's attitude s and interests.
Firstly, the way people look, dress and act indeed reveal their attitudes and interests. Most of us will agree that one who wants to show a good manner usually dress differently according to different occasions. For instance, during some formal events, such as wedding, graduation ceremony and interview, one often wears formal suit. Similarly, the dress and action between different individuals also reveal their different attitudes and interests. For example, one who can queue shows that he/she respects the public order and who cannot suggests otherwise. Hence, we can know about the attitudes and interests of the people by observing their dresses and actions.
In addition, the appearance and behavior of the people often tell much about the social ideas and valves. The situation before and after the opening-up in China aptly illustrates my viewpoints. Before 1978, most Chinese people dressed identical style and act following the same pattern. After the reform and opening-up, they have access to various styles of clothes and engage in different professions. It shows that people's interests have changed and the ideas and values of society have altered too, from the planned economic regime to a premature market economy. Let us assume that the observer knew nothing about the Reform and Open Policy, merely judging from the address, he or she can safely conclude that there must be a dramatic change in the social economy, which consequently leads to a huge change in social ideas and values. This is an example with numerous people, yet sometime one can tell much from several vital persons. Considering the Chinese leaders participating a few significant international conference, sometimes they will dress the Chinese traditional clothes-Tang Clothes, which can be interpreted as a signal of their calling for a cultural identification of all the Chinese in the world. Therefore, one can tell much about the social ideas and values with appropriate approach of observing the people.
Furthermore, the ideas and values of a society are embodied into the regulation of authority, public welfare, law and other provisions, with which the society imposes its will to the people and influences their action and thinking. In turn, people in the society can change the law and other regulations. For example, it is common in western countries that young parents leave the baby in his/her own room when sleeping, which demonstrates that the society place high value on the independent personality. While, in China, youth parents usually act in the contrast approach, having the babies around themselves.
Similarly, one can tell the Chinese society emphasizes on the collective ideas. It is noticeable, however, that one cannot obtain accurate understanding from the behavior of the people unless they employ an proper way.
In conclusion, as the element of a society, what people dress and act do reveal a lot about both the attitudes and the hidden values and ideas of the society. It is not hard to comprehend as long as one is equipped with appropriate insight and perception.
