TOPIC: ISSUE7 - "The video camera provides such an accurate and convincing record of contemporary life that it has become a more important form of documentation than written records."

The advent of modern media such as Television, video camera, computer are leading a reformation in our traditional way of recording information. Video camera, due to its strong power of vivid and true reflection of events, is widely used in news report and serves as a important tool of documentation. But, has the video camera become a more important form of documentation than written records? In my opinion, although video camera has enriched documenting ways, however, the major role of written records can not be superceded by video camera.  

Admittedly, due to the capability of catching moving imagines and truly reflecting events, the video camera enjoys an increasing usage both in public and private realm. We may notice that around us more and more people have already bought a video camera. This electrical tool facilitates recording our trip and our festival. Since it's convenient to manipulate and require nothing rather than let it work alone. Even better, this documentation is vivid and most of time is full of more contents than traditional writing words. In public realm, the camera is used to report news and provide objective imagines about the society. Modern media flourishes through the widely usage of video camera. Events happening in other side of the earth can be viewed in internet or televison through the camera and some transient imagines are kept eternally by camera. It's because of vedieo camera that we are able to enjoy most of sceneries that can't be obtained by traditional way.

Not denying the importance of video camera, there are still many aspects where video camera cann't serve as a substitute to written words. Firstly, written records can happen everywhere, which just need a simple paper and pen. And this records are as well easily corrected. While considering the video camera, as a result of high technology, it has all the flaws of a technological products. For instance, it cann't work without electricity and it can be easily damaged and cannot be utilized under some extremely climate. In that sense, traditional written records are more reliable and widely adapted. Meanwhile, the high price of video camera causes the result that most ordinary people can't afford it. In such case, written records may become the best choice.

Secondly, the most important function of written records is it includes the subjective ideas of writer. Many people may criticize this subjective records. However, such subjective records is essential for latter people to know other hidden contents about an event. As we all know, only watching the news without comments is not enough, because these comments help us understand context , cause and reason of one event, which can not be shown just by the video camera. We should keep in mind that the video camera is just a technological tool and it can not replace the role of human being. Since written records are work of human being, it can also not be replaced by the video camera.

Furthermore, traditional written way is also changing with the steps of technological developing. Utilizing computer rather than pen to write words, written records are also enjoying the advancement of technology. The emergence of new channels to document events such as blog are making written records international and in line with the times.

In summary, the video camera is just a technological tool and although this tool has merits such as accurate and convenient, it can not replace the role of human being. We should make good use of technology without abandoning traditional methods. The video camera and written records can build upon one another, rusulting in a multimedia testimony to modern life.
