Admittedly, there is no denying that the precondition of being a effective leader is of high ethical and moral standards. Otherwise, it’s high likely to bring about damages and harms to both the country and the public. That`s not to mean, however, an effective leader should preserve the highest moral standards, which is unreasonable and also impossible considering the reality. Moreover, many leaders have been recognized as effective although they themselves have some problems about ethical and moral standards. Accordingly, I agree with the statement insofar as high ethical and moral standards are the essential characters for the purpose of being an effective leader, while I can hardly share with the idea of highest ethical and moral standards.
To begin with, we should acknowledge the significant and indispensible role of ethical and moral standards play in directing our behaviors, especially for our leaders. A leader with high ethical and moral standards can not only resist corruption and abusing power to the greatest extent, but also earn remarkable support and respect from the public, which will surly help the leaders to be more effective. Consider Zhou Enlai, first premier of the People’s Republic of China, considerably high ethical and moral standars had won him great respect from the public, which in turn made his work go on effectively and smoothly.(说明道德对effective的作用) By contrast, supposing the leader of a country fails to manage his ethical and moral standards, people will doubt his ability and effectiveness to make right decisions on public affairs.(先从浅层次说如果leader连自己的道德问题都解决不好,那么人民就会怀疑他们的能力)What's worse,(再进一步说明危害性) there is no more dangerous thing than electing a leader without ethical and moral standards, which most likely brings catastrophes to both the nations and the people. Accordingly, people will definitely never consider them as effective leaders. Take two examples to substantiate my viewpoint. Fist, Hideki Tojo convicted as a Class A war criminal once served as a senior colonel in Japanese forces. Second, Mussolini, Italian Fascist dictator and Premier, brought Italy into World War II. These tragedies took place mainly derived from the electing leaders with low, even no ethical and moral standards. They are doomed to be notorious forever and no one will consider them to be effective.
Notwithstanding, from my viewpoint, it is unnecessary to require leaders to attain highest ethical and moral standards considering the reality. Besides, leaders can also promise to be effective even there are ethical or moral foibles. For examples, William Jefferson Clinton, the 42nd President of US and the New Noble prize winner in humanity contribution in 2009, once got involved in the sexual scandal; Ron Moo-hyun, South Korea’s former President and the New Noble peace prize winner in 2009, had been charged of his relatives’ accepting bribes in his life; F.D Roosevelt, famous President of US, were connected with extramarital affair. Albeit those inappropriate behaviors, they are still recognized as great and effective leaders in the world. Hence, from the examples, we can clearly realize that leader’s private life is usually separate from his work, we should believe that his minor flaws in moral would not affect his work.(总结出本段TS,即使有道德瑕疵也不妨碍成为effective leader)
Additionally, we have got to realize that one cannot promise to be an effective leader only depending on highest ethical and moral standards. Since the equally significant characters of being an effective leader, in my opinion, are personal horizons, courage, and endeavor. Consider Confucius, the greatest thinkers in Chinese history, had never been invited by any emperor to assist governing the country because his kindhearted couldn`t help these emperors achieve victory in battles. Thus, they would prefer to have conversations with Confucius rather than appointing a post to him, let alone to be an effective leader.
To sum up, high moral standards undeniably exerts an important role in leaders’ management and effectiveness;(注意标点) nevertheless,it would be unreasonable and impractical for us to expect our leader maintain the highest ethical and moral standards, and as I have discussed above, ethical and moral foibles actually do not prevent those great leaders from being effective. |
