TOPIC: ISSUE120  "So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present."


The modern society is complex and diverse. Compared with the past, the habits of life, idea of social value, and the problems we face in area of science and politic are totally different. It seems no necessary to look back and learn from it, however, before we make this conclusion we should know the society is a whole and cannot divided.

To argue the essential of learning from the past, the first thing we should make clear is the derivation of the modern society. For examples, in science area, the atomism which we inspected now, was already put up with in ancient Greek , and developed in Renaissance; and the nebula theory of Kant still has a great role in modern science. These great achievements indicate that even the modern society is complicated than the former, the derivations of these verities we can find in the past, which may help us understand well with the complex situations from its essence and inside.

Further, there happened numerous accidents in the process of society which shows the importance of learning from history. Such as famous French Revolution. relay it we have to using a philosopher, Burk's idea that French Revolution can subvert their monarchy, but not resume the freedom. Looking bake to the revolution, they claimed to destroy all shackle of traditions and the whole old idea, destroying the church, monarchy, and nobility. The consequence is their failure. Because they try to eradicate all of the traditions and idea of the past and build a new one. This neglect of the history and not learning from the past successful instances,
such as English revolution, will surely fall. Thus, what we can get from this fail is that neglect the history could cause serious outcome.

In fact, the modern society has strong compact which the past. Even the new technology not occurred in the past, such as nuclear power, internet and so on. We still get find the experience form the past.  The application of nuclear power. For instance, should we product and apply it in battle? The history offered us clear answers. From crusades expeditions to the two Word War, which intend to expend land and power. In these wars, the advanced and high damage weapons caused so many losses that less people would tend to support these nuclear power which may cause the unexpected effect in wars. And peace become the aim and instance of more people now.

Thus, we should look back to history and learn from the experience and teaching in the past, only if we know more the past, more mistakes would avoid, and more benefits would be bring about.
