TOPIC: ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."

In modern society, the way people look, act and dress varies dramatically in different countries, I agree that through a observation into the contemporary dressing style or the way people act in certain country can one get a brief understanding about the attitudes, interests or even the moralities of the country. However, it is far form enough to obtain the comprehensive view of the social value, which calls for an explicit and specific investigation of many aspects.
To begin with, admittedly, it is true that certain ideas and values of a society can be inferred from the way people act. For example, people with a polite and decent manner are often well-educated, when it comes to a common character of a country, a conclusion may be made that the education of the country are effective and successful for the reason that all these residents we meet are inculcated with courtesy and politeness. Further, the fashion trend of clothing in a country can also contribute to the understanding of the attitude of a society. The American dress open and colorfully, the French dress romantically, the Germany dress formally, the Arabian dress conservatively, and these different fashions of clothes come to diversities in culture and eventually in the social value.
However, are these observations of dressing style or acting method really and exactly mirror the factual desire of people who live in certain country? Possibly not. For one point, by the eye of an outsider, what you observe can cheat you so as to make a fairly judgment subsequently. As the example cited above, the seemingly good-mannered gentleman can continue his decent manner to other people, especially to people he acquaints. Studies show that people tend to perform in their best manner to foreigners. For another point, the so-called 'fashion of clothes' you observe sometimes is not the case. Many people are forced to wear certain kind of clothes such as formal suit and school uniform while they do not really want to dress them. Thus, from where I am standing, these observations are always misleading and unwarranted.
Moreover, in many cases, the people's wearance and behavior mood is too rapidly changeable to demonstrate the value and idea of the society which demands for a development of a long period. With the development of globalization and information technology, developments in many fields, especially the clothing industry, become faster and more changeable. People nowadays are more easily to be affected by the fashion of other countries, thus results in a changeable fashion of clothing or even behavior mode of people. Besides, the value of a society does not equate the contemporary fashion or popular behavior mode of people at one time, it is determined by the culture, history and many other factors.
All in all, although I concede that it can be effective sometimes to get a brief understanding about a society's ideas and attitudes just by judging from the observation of people's wearance and behavior mode, it becomes less reliable nowadays, and many other factors, such as the history and the culture of the country, should be concentrated in order to get a comprehensive and correct view of the society. |
